World of Warcraft: Forever is a new, permanent version of World of Warcraft that takes the original 2004 world and Classic’s gameplay and builds new content on top: four new zones, nine new dungeons, more than a thousand new quests, reworked classes and a new playable race, the Skyborne. WoW Forever is set before Molten Core with a level cap of 60, and what separates it from Classic is that Blizzard plans to keep adding new raids, dungeons and quests to that world for years instead of replaying content that already existed. Its worldwide launch is November 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST (23:00 UTC), per Blizzard’s launch announcement. It has no box price: WoW Forever is included with a regular World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time ($14.99 a month in the US), and only the Skyborne race needs a paid pack, starting at $29.99.
Below: answers to the questions people ask most, taken from Blizzard’s own announcements, and every live ByteTavern WoW Forever guide grouped by topic. Status on November 2: the beta closed on October 23, name reservation for pack owners runs until November 3, and launch is November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST.

WoW Forever FAQ
Is WoW Forever Classic or retail?
Neither. WoW Forever is a third version of World of Warcraft, separate from both retail and Classic. Game director Ion Hazzikostas called it “a third pillar alongside Retail and Classic” in an interview with Windows Central, and Blizzard’s What’s Next panel recap says it is “not a mode, a season, or a new version of Classic.” Our WoW Forever vs Classic vs Retail comparison goes through the differences topic by topic.
In play it sits much closer to Classic: the original two continents, ordinary mobs that take 10 to 15 seconds to kill, no flying mounts, no level scaling and no automatic dungeon matchmaking. It runs on the modern client, though, with HD character models (SD optional), official gamepad support (still in a beta state, per Blizzard) and a built-in Cooldown Manager.
Is WoW Forever free?
No, but there is nothing to buy up front. Blizzard’s pre-purchase announcement says WoW Forever requires a World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time, the same one that covers retail and Classic ($14.99 a month in the US). The packs are optional, and the Skyborne race is the only gameplay they add. The one free way in is an Invite-A-Friend code from a pack owner, valid November 4 to 11. Our WoW Forever editions comparison covers which pack, if any, is worth buying.
Can you play WoW Forever on Mac?
Yes. Blizzard’s New Player’s Starter Guide (October 28) lists Windows and Mac, the beta ran on macOS through the Battle.net app, and Blizzard’s September 24 beta development notes list a fix for display problems on Mac. Blizzard’s launch articles tell players to check the official system requirements before installing. In the first beta week, Apple Silicon players on Blizzard’s forums reported freezes when loading into the world, which lower shadow and lighting settings worked around.
Is WoW Forever on Xbox or console?
No. Blizzard hasn’t announced WoW Forever for Xbox, PlayStation or Switch. Forever has official gamepad support for playing with a controller on your computer, but according to Digital Citizen, Ion Hazzikostas said that shouldn’t be read as a sign of an Xbox version. A Brazilian age rating listing Forever for consoles appeared on September 29 and was removed within hours, as Windows Central reported.
Will WoW Forever have transmog?
Yes, as an opt-in system. According to Blizzard’s systems panel recap, you set up transmog at a transmogrifier in certain cities, or switch it off entirely and see every player in their real gear. Picking the Classic experience preset at first login turns it off, while appearances keep collecting in the background. Plate only transmogs to plate, cloth to cloth, and high-level appearances unlock at level 60. Bind-on-pickup Uncommon and Rare dungeon drops give their appearance to every eligible looter, so nobody rolls on an item just for its look.
Does WoW Forever have a Dungeon Finder?
Not one that queues and teleports you. WoW Forever has a Group Finder for posting and browsing groups (Blizzard’s October 8 beta notes added a voice chat option to it), but no automatic matchmaking, which Hazzikostas called a trade-off that makes the game more social. You travel to the entrance yourself, and meeting stones can’t summon, according to a developer interview reported by Zockify. Our WoW Forever dungeons by level guide lists every dungeon with its level range.
Will WoW Forever have arena?
No arena has been announced. Blizzard’s PvP plans for Forever are battlegrounds, including the new 15 vs 15 Darkspear Islands, world PvP on the PvP ruleset, and PvP season refreshes on the 2027 roadmap. Icy Veins’ PvP overview states that Forever has no arena; arenas first came with The Burning Crusade.
Is WoW Forever replacing Classic?
No. Blizzard’s Carve a New Path page calls Forever “a new permanent home alongside modern and Classic WoW,” and Hazzikostas told Windows Central that Classic remains and “that ecosystem will continue.” One subscription covers all three versions.
Will WoW Forever have flying or housing?
No flying: Blizzard’s What’s Next recap lists “no flying mounts, no level scaling” among Forever’s design rules. Ground mounts work like in The Burning Crusade, where training riding gives you a mount. Housing hasn’t been announced for Forever; the housing decor in the Forever packs is for modern World of Warcraft.
