World of Warcraft: Forever launches on November 4 with Classic’s skinning rules as far as the beta shows, so this WoW Forever skinning leveling guide is a route you can follow from day one: your starting zone to 75, the Barrens (Horde) or the Wetlands (Alliance) to 150, Hillsbrad Foothills and Stranglethorn Vale to 225, Feralas to 275 and Un’Goro Crater to 300. Six route maps show where the beasts for each skill bracket spawn and what leather they drop.

Skinning changed the least of the three gathering professions in Forever. Corpses can only be skinned once again, Scarce Pristine materials drop on top of the leather, and Skinning’s camp objects give a 2% critical strike buff at a campfire. What Skinning doesn’t have, in the beta client at least, is the bonus damage against Beasts that some guides list.

How solid this is: the beta runs until October 21 and stops at level 30, so nobody has skinned Forever’s high-level zones yet. The skill rules below are Classic’s, and Zockify’s Forever guide uses the same ones. Beast spawns and drop chances come from the Classic databases classicdb and cmangos; we placed the spawns on Forever’s maps with the map bounds from the beta client and checked that placement against published Forever coordinates for 13 trainers in 13 zones (all within 0.15 map units). We will check the route against the live game in launch week.

WoW Forever Skinning Leveling Route at a Glance

The fastest way to level Skinning in WoW Forever is to skin every beast you kill while questing. A beast needs about five times its level in skill, so your Skinning keeps pace with your character on its own, and you only need a detour if you pick it up late. This table is the whole route.

The zone level ranges match our WoW Forever zones by level guide. Skinning pairs well with Herbalism: the Barrens, Hillsbrad, Stranglethorn and Un’Goro are stops on both routes, see our WoW Forever herbalism leveling guide. Our mining leveling guide covers the other gathering pair.

Skinning Level Requirements: Skill Needed per Mob Level

In WoW Forever, as in Classic, a beast of level 20 or higher needs Skinning skill equal to five times its level, and a beast between level 11 and 19 needs (level minus 10) times 10. Any beast of level 10 or lower needs skill 1. Zockify’s Forever guide gives the same rule, and Warcraft Tavern’s Classic guide uses the five-times rule. Under Classic’s gathering rule, a beast gives a point on every skin for its first 25 points, then turns yellow, green from 50 points and grey 100 points above its requirement; kami-labs notes that this still needs confirming in Forever.

55275300375

What this means for leveling: on beasts of your own level, Skinning runs up to about five times your level plus 25 and then slows down. You need level 55 beasts to keep getting a point on every skin up to 300, so a character that skins while questing finishes around level 55 (our estimate). If every skin is orange, 1-300 takes about 300 skins; with some yellow and green skins, plan on 350 to 400.

Which Leather Each Mob Level Drops

In Classic data, beasts drop Light Leather up to about level 21, Medium Leather from 20 to 35, Heavy from 30 to 45, Thick from 40 to 55 and Rugged from 50. Each leather has a step where it is the main drop and one where it shares the skin with the next tier. The chances below are averages over the skinnable beasts on classicdb and in the cmangos Classic database. Forever’s skinning tables aren’t public, so these are Classic values.

The exact switch level varies by a level or two between beasts. Scales come from specific beasts: Scorpid Scale from the scorpids in Tanaris, Heavy Scorpid Scale from those in Silithus, Red Whelp Scale from the whelps in the Wetlands, and Devilsaur Leather only from Devilsaurs in Un’Goro.

Skinning 1-75: Starting Zones

Skinning from 1 to 75 in WoW Forever works in every starting zone, because all beasts up to level 10 need skill 1 and give points until 25. You need a Skinning Knife in your bags; Trade Supplies vendors sell it for 10 copper in the beta client’s data. New Junior Skinning Trainers in the original starting areas teach Apprentice only, and starter-zone quests can reward Pelt Collecting for Beginners, which teaches Skinning if you know fewer than two professions and adds 2 skill up to 15 (Zockify; the item’s effect is in the beta client).

From level 10, move to your first leveling zone: Westfall’s coyotes and Goretusks, Loch Modan’s bears and boars, Darkshore’s Thistle Bears and Moonstalkers, Silverpine’s worgs and bears or the northern Barrens. Train Journeyman at skill 50, before the Apprentice cap of 75 stops you. Skyborne players can skin the beasts on Zephras Isle, though nobody has published their levels.

Skinning 10-150 for the Horde: The Barrens

WoW Forever skinning route map of the Barrens for skill 10 to 150, with plainstrider, zhevra and lion areas around the Crossroads, thunder lizards in the middle and Thunderheads and Silithids south of Camp Taurajo
Barrens route for skill 10 to 150. Beast spawns are Classic data, placed on Forever’s Barrens map with the beta client’s map bounds. Trainer position from Zockify. Map: Blizzard Entertainment

The Barrens takes a Horde skinner from about 10 to 150 in one zone. Classic data puts about 1,650 skinnable beast spawns there across the three bands on the map: plainstriders, zhevras, Savannah Prowlers and Sunscale raptors (level 11-16) around the Crossroads, thunder lizards and Ornery Plainstriders (16-21) in the middle, and Thunderheads, Stormhides, Hecklefang Stalkers and Silithids (20-25) south of Camp Taurajo. Start at the Crossroads, loop north toward the Sludge Fen, come down the coast past Ratchet and follow the road south.

Dranh in Camp Taurajo teaches every rank, so you can train Expert at 125 on the way without a trip to a capital. If the Barrens are crowded in launch week, Stonetalon Mountains (levels 15-28) and Thousand Needles (24-35) continue the bracket.

Skinning 105-170 for the Alliance: The Wetlands

The Wetlands is the Alliance skinning zone for 105 to 170: 142 crocolisk, 66 Mottled raptor and 119 Highland raptor spawns in Classic data, all level 21 to 29, plus 70 whelps (dragonkin) that add Red Whelp Scale. Fly into Menethil Harbor, take the Mottled raptors around Whelgar’s Excavation Site, cross the delta for crocolisks, then follow the northern hills east for Highland raptors and come back down the river. The Wetlands is one of five zones where Blizzard’s October 1 beta notes “increased the respawn rate across many different creatures and objects”, so expect beasts back faster than in Classic.

Before 105, Alliance players fill the gap in eastern Loch Modan (level 16-20 bears and boars) or Duskwood (level 19-26 wolves and Black Ravagers). Train Expert at 125 in Ironforge (Balthus Stoneflayer) or Stormwind (Maris Granger).

Skinning 105-195: Hillsbrad Foothills

Hillsbrad loop for skill 105 to 195. Beast spawns are Classic data on Forever’s Hillsbrad map, which matches Classic apart from the new Southshore pier. Map: Blizzard Entertainment

Hillsbrad Foothills is the skinning zone both factions share for 105 to 195. Classic data counts 200 gray bears and 60 mountain lions (level 21-28) in the lowlands, 24 Snapjaw turtles (30-31) on the river and 35 Mountain Lions plus 34 yetis (30-34) in the hills toward Alterac. Run west from Southshore, north through Hillsbrad Fields into the hills, east to Tarren Mill and down the river. Hillsbrad also got the October 1 respawn increase, as did Ashenvale (level 18-31 bears, stags and wolves) and Thousand Needles (24-35), the two alternatives.

From 150, Zockify’s Forever route moves to the Alterac Mountains yetis and Mountain Lions, which works as an extension of this loop until about 200.

Skinning 150-245: Stranglethorn Vale

Stranglethorn route for skill 150 to 245. Beast spawns are Classic data on Forever’s Stranglethorn map, placed with the beta client’s map bounds. Map: Blizzard Entertainment

Stranglethorn Vale covers Skinning from 150 to 245 because its beasts climb steadily from level 30 in the north to 44 in the south. Young tigers, panthers and raptors (30-33) give Medium Leather, the raptors, basilisks and crocolisks around Grom’gol (34-36) Heavy and Medium, Jungle Stalkers, Jungle Thunderers and Elder Mistvale Gorillas (37-41) mostly Heavy, and the Ironjaw and Thrashtail basilisks and Silverback Patriarchs (41-44) Thick and Heavy. The level 50 gorillas and stalkers on Jaguero Isle are a Thick Leather spot for 250 and up.

Train Artisan at 200; gathering professions need character level 25 for it. No skinning trainer stands in Stranglethorn, so plan a trip to a capital. Arathi Highlands, Desolace, the Swamp of Sorrows, the Badlands and Dustwallow Marsh are the alternatives. Forever’s new Riverglades zone (level 35 to 45) should fit here too, but which beasts live there isn’t public.

Skinning 200-275: Feralas

WoW Forever skinning route map of Feralas for skill 200 to 275, with Longtooth Runners and Ironfur Bears around Camp Mojache, hippogryphs and yetis in the High Wilderness and Rabid Longtooths at the Twin Colossals
Feralas route for skill 200 to 275. Beast spawns are Classic data on Forever’s Feralas map, which matches the Classic map. Trainer position from Classic data and kami-labs. Map: Blizzard Entertainment

Feralas gives both factions Thick Leather from skill 200 to 275. In Classic data, 98 Longtooth Runners and 67 Ironfur Bears (level 40-42) roam Feralas, most of them around Camp Mojache; hippogryphs and Rogue Vale Screechers (43-47) fill the High Wilderness, and Rabid Longtooths, Ironfur Patriarchs and Groddoc Thunderers (47-50) give Thick plus 20% Rugged at the Twin Colossals. The yetis of Feral Scar Vale and Rage Scar Hold are skinnable too, and our Classic Thick Leather farming guide covers them. Kulleg Stonehorn in Camp Mojache trains Horde skinners; kami-labs lists him, Zockify’s list doesn’t.

The Hinterlands (level 40-50 wolves and gryphons) and Tanaris (hyenas, basilisks and scorpids with Scorpid Scale) do the same job.

Skinning 240-300: Un’Goro Crater

WoW Forever skinning route map of Un'Goro Crater for skill 240 to 300, with Ravasaurs in the south-east, Diemetradons and Frenzied Pterrordax in the west, elite Stegodons in the south-west and Devilsaur spawn points
Un’Goro loop for skill 240 to 300. Beast spawns are Classic data on Forever’s Un’Goro map, which is unchanged from Classic. Devilsaurs patrol, so their dots are spawn points only. Map: Blizzard Entertainment

Un’Goro Crater finishes Skinning from 240 to 300: almost every animal in the crater is a skinnable beast, and the Elder Diemetradons reach level 55, which keeps them orange until 300. Ravasaurs (48-51) in the south-east give Thick Leather, Diemetradons and Frenzied Pterrordax (51-55) in the west give Rugged about half the time, and the elite Stegodons in the south-west do the same. Devilsaurs (elite, 54-56) drop Devilsaur Leather on every skin; our Devilsaur Leather farming guide has the patrol routes.

Forever adds the Shaper’s Terrace dungeon (58-60) in Un’Goro, so expect company. Winterspring, Silithus and the Eastern Plaguelands (55-60) give more Rugged Leather per skin; see our Classic Rugged Leather farming spots.

WoW Forever Skinning Trainers and Rank Requirements

WoW Forever skinning trainers teach all four ranks in every capital and in several leveling towns, according to Zockify’s beta data. Gathering ranks need less character level than crafting ones (Icy Veins’ beta table):

RankSkill capRequirementCost
Apprentice75NoneNot listed
Journeyman150Skill 50 (crafters also need level 10)5 silver
Expert225Skill 125 and character level 10 (crafters: 20)50 silver
Artisan300Skill 200 and character level 25 (crafters: 35)5 gold

Costs are from Zockify. Skinning can’t run ahead of the beasts you can kill, so the level gates never hold you back.

Coordinates are Zockify’s, except Kulleg Stonehorn and Wilma Ranthal. Zockify gives Wilma at 88.8, 71.0, which is her position on the Classic Redridge map; Forever redrew Redridge, and with the beta client’s map bounds she stands at 83.7, 71.3. Blizzard’s September 24 notes fixed Helene Peltskinner in Goldshire so she teaches Skinning while you have her quest. Two glove enchants push your skill past 300 for the few creatures that need more: Enchant Gloves – Skinning (+5) and Forever’s new Enchant Gloves – Advanced Skinning (+10, in the beta client; formula source unknown).

What’s New for Skinning in WoW Forever

WoW Forever keeps Classic’s skinning as far as the beta shows and adds extra drops, camp objects and one rule change; Blizzard’s October 8 notes don’t touch Skinning. “Beta data” means the beta client, read by Zockify or by us on wago.tools (build 1.60.1.70374, October 13).

Blizzard’s systems panel recap names Bountiful Harvest as the gatherer’s Legacy perk. The Camp Chair is the camp object worth making: crit for the whole party at every campfire from skill 20, and the Field Guide adds Track Beasts for classes that lack it.

Does Skinning Give a Bonus Against Beasts in WoW Forever?

No, not in the beta. Icy Veins’ professions overview lists 5% more damage against Beasts and Dragonkin as the Skinning perk, but those perk names trace to a community transcription of the BlizzCon demo, and Blizzard’s recap doesn’t mention profession passives. We checked the Skinning ability list in build 1.60.1.70374: the four skinning ranks (each in two versions), the three camp objects and a Tanning ability that “allows the skinner to add features to a wilderness camp”. No passive. Our mining guide found the same for all three gathering perks in build 70235. Blizzard could still add them before November 4.

What Your Leather Is For: Leatherworking

Leatherworking buys almost all of it. The route in our WoW Forever leatherworking leveling guide uses about 95 Ruined Leather Scraps, 211 Light, 271 Medium, 208 Heavy and 302 Thick Leather to reach 225, and about 670 Rugged Leather from 225 to 300, because Forever’s recipes ask for Rugged 25 points earlier than Classic.

LeatherOne skinner’s 1-300 run (our estimate)One Leatherworker, 1-300
Ruined Leather Scraps25-3595
Light Leatherabout 105211
Medium Leatherabout 45271
Heavy Leatherabout 40208
Thick Leatherabout 50302
Rugged Leather25-30about 670

The estimate assumes about 300 skins on beasts at the top of your skill and Classic drop chances. A character who skins every beast on the way to 60 collects far more, but the gap explains the launch week market: Thick Leather is needed from Leatherworking 195, when most crafters are level 30 to 35 and few skinners reach level 40 beasts yet. Hold Thick and Rugged Leather instead of selling it early. Pristine materials go into Forever’s new gear: 80 Leatherworking recipes use Pristine Leather, 43 use 2 to 10 Pristine Hides each, and Pristine Scale goes into 12 recipes, most of them skill 300 pieces that take 10 each (SeeMeta’s beta data). Our WoW Forever professions guide pairs Skinning with Leatherworking for Hunters, Rogues, Druids and Shamans.

FAQ

Where is the skinning trainer in WoW Forever?

Every capital has a WoW Forever skinning trainer who teaches all four ranks, for example Thuwd in Orgrimmar’s Drag and Maris Granger in Stormwind’s Old Town. Dranh in Camp Taurajo, Yonn Deepcut in Bloodhoof Village and Helene Peltskinner in Goldshire teach every rank too.

What level do you need for Expert and Artisan Skinning in WoW Forever?

Expert Skinning needs skill 125 and character level 10, Artisan needs skill 200 and character level 25, per Icy Veins’ beta table. Journeyman needs skill 50 and no character level.

Where do you get a Skinning Knife in WoW Forever?

Trade Supplies vendors sell the Skinning Knife, usually next to the trainer. It only needs to be in your bags, not equipped.

Is there a skinning bag in WoW Forever?

No skinning bag is in the beta item data. Forever’s new reagent bag slot takes Leatherworking’s 6-slot Light Leather Reagent Bag or Tailoring’s reagent bags (6 to 20 slots).

What is the fastest way to level Skinning in WoW Forever?

Skin every beast you kill while questing and favor beasts whose level is close to your skill divided by five: the Barrens or the Wetlands to 150, Hillsbrad and Stranglethorn to 225, Feralas to 275 and Un’Goro Crater to 300.
