World of Warcraft: Forever launches on November 4 with the same twelve professions as Classic and no new ones, but WoW Forever professions do a lot more than they used to. Blizzard’s BlizzCon systems panel recap promises over 600 new recipes, crafted food that gives a small experience bonus, Blueprint recipes that drop from dungeon bosses, and Camping, a system where every profession crafts objects that buff everyone sitting at a campfire.

The short answer for your first character: take Cooking and First Aid no matter what, because food now speeds up leveling and First Aid now makes the healing potions. For your two primary slots, pick two gathering professions if you want gold, or the crafting profession that makes your armor type plus its gatherer if you want power while leveling. Details, class picks and the reasoning are below.

How sure is this? Blizzard has confirmed the systems (recipe count, Camping, food XP, Blueprints). Most specific recipes, numbers and camp objects come from the beta client and datamining sites, and we label them that way. The beta runs until October 21, so recipe costs and skill ranges can still move before launch.

What Changed From Classic Professions

The WoW Forever profession list is identical to Classic: six crafting professions (Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Leatherworking, Tailoring), three gathering professions (Herbalism, Mining, Skinning) and three secondary skills (Cooking, First Aid, Fishing). You still get two primary professions per character plus all three secondary ones. What changed is almost everything around them.

High-end recipes also use new materials, for example the Legionite Bar and Azerothium Bar in the Enriched Thorium Breastplate plan shown on the BlizzCon panel slides. Where those come from is not known yet.

Cooking and First Aid: Take Both on Every Character

Cooking and First Aid are the two WoW Forever professions every character should learn, because both now affect leveling speed directly. According to the BlizzCon systems panel recap, almost all crafted food gives a stat bonus plus a small experience bonus. The cooking recipes shown at the BlizzCon panel all read “5% more experience from kills” for 15 minutes while Well Fed, from Tasty Raptor Bites at Cooking 25 up to Bat Hachee at 275.

A 5% kill XP bonus that you keep up for the entire 1 to 60 trip adds up to a few hours saved, and it costs a secondary slot you weren’t using anyway.

First Aid is the bigger rework. The BlizzCon demo showed four recipe groups at First Aid 225: the First Aid Kit camp object, bandages, curatives (Woolen Tourniquet cures bleeds, Simple Poultice cures diseases, Anti-Venom cures poisons) and healing potions. Healing Potions used to be Alchemy’s easiest seller. In Forever every character can make their own, so expect low-level healing potions to be worth little on the auction house.

Camping Buffs by Profession

Camping in WoW Forever turns the Cooking Fire into a Basic Campfire. Up to three players can each add one crafted object, the objects share a one-hour cooldown, and people who sit at the fire get one-hour buffs. Blizzard confirmed that every profession has three objects and that each profession gives its own buff no matter which of its objects you place. The buffs are weaker variants of class buffs and don’t stack with them.

CookingBasic CampfireExpert CampfireHolds more objects (5 or 10)

Blizzard’s recap names only some of these objects; the full list comes from Warcraft Tavern’s beta guide (tier 2 objects left out for space). Exact values from the BlizzCon build: the Sharpening Wheel and First Aid Kit give 34 of their stat. Warcraft Tavern reports the Fishing buff at 8% all stats, against 10% for Blessing of Kings.

What this means in practice: camp buffs won’t replace a raid’s paladins and druids, but they cover the classes a five-player group or a duo doesn’t have. For professions, the most useful camp objects while leveling are the Leatherworking Camp Tent (rested XP) and the First Aid Kit (Stamina, available to everyone who took First Aid). No profession is worth picking for its camp object alone.

Profession Changes by Profession

ProfessionBiggest change in the betaNew recipes (datamined)

BlacksmithingRare plans for leveling, spell power plate and mail; Armorsmith and Weaponsmith kept203
EnchantingNecklace and off-hand enchants, metal staves, class relics63

Zockify’s datamined counts add up to roughly 970, above Blizzard’s “over 600”, because datamines count every rank and variant. Read them as a sign of where the attention went: Leatherworking and Blacksmithing got the biggest overhauls, and Enchanting’s relics and necklace enchants (bought with Merchant’s Favor at 210 skill, per Zockify) are the most interesting new item types.

Best Profession Pairs in WoW Forever

The best profession pair in WoW Forever depends on your goal. Gatherers still make gold from level 1 with no investment. What’s new is that crafters get real gear while leveling, not only at 60.

GoalPairWhy
Gold from day oneHerbalism + MiningNo material costs, both sell to every crafter, both work with Bountiful Harvest
Gold, no herbs neededMining + SkinningGood for classes that kill a lot of beasts; Skinning costs no travel time
Leveling a plate classBlacksmithing + MiningRare plans for your own armor from very low levels
Leveling leather or mailLeatherworking + SkinningThe largest set of new leveling gear, plus the Camp Tent for rested XP
Leveling a cloth classTailoring + EnchantingNo gatherer needed; you disenchant your own crafts
Raiding at 60Alchemy + Herbalism, or your gear craftConsumables stay the raid tax; best in slot crafts at 60 are not known yet

For a first character, our pick is a gatherer pair until level 40 or so, then swapping one gatherer for a crafter once you have gold. The reason is what beta testers report about leveling crafts: a September 19 thread on the beta forums describes rare boots at Blacksmithing and Leatherworking skill 35 that level 10 characters can wear, and ore being plentiful in starting zones. The ore part is already outdated: the October 1 beta build reduced the number of Poor Copper Vein nodes in starter areas. If the rest stays, crafted leveling gear is strong and cheap to make, but early copper will be harder to find than that thread suggests. The boots are a player report from an early beta build, not a Blizzard statement.

If you plan to level alts, the WoW Forever Legacy System changes the math: every crafting profession you raise to 150, 225 and 300 earns account-wide Legacy Points, and the Professions tree has perks like Working Overtime (more skill-ups) and Bountiful Harvest (more Scarce materials from gathering).

Best Professions for Each Class

These are our picks for a main that wants power first and gold second, based on which profession makes that class’s gear in the beta data. Swap the crafter for a second gatherer on any of them if gold matters more.

Two races have profession racials. Gnome Engineering Specialization now makes engineering devices less likely to backfire instead of adding skill, and Tauren Cultivation grows bonus herbs that don’t need Herbalism to gather. A Tauren can skip Herbalism and still pick up some herbs, which frees a slot for Mining and Skinning. Our WoW Forever best race guide covers the rest of both kits.

Making Gold With WoW Forever Professions

Gathering is the safest way to make gold with WoW Forever professions at launch, because every crafter levels at the same time and nobody has a stockpile. A few Forever-specific angles are worth planning around:

  • Reagent bags. Every character has a new reagent bag slot, and Tailoring makes those bags from Linen (6 slots) up to the Bottomless Reagent Bag (20 slots). That’s demand from every player on the server, similar to regular bags in Classic.
  • Consumables that First Aid can’t make. Alchemy lost cheap Healing Potions, so its value moves to mana potions, elixirs, protection potions and flasks.
  • Craftsman’s Writs. Sealed Writs drop from enemies and ask for specific crafted items. Writs are transferable, so a crafter can buy writs cheap or sell the requested items to writ holders.
  • Merchant’s Favor. Waylaid Supplies crates pay out Merchant’s Favor, which buys recipes such as the necklace enchants and, at 1,000 Favor, a certification that unlocks an account-wide profession title at 300.

The weak spot: many of the best new leveling crafts are bind on pickup, so Leatherworkers and Blacksmiths can wear them but can’t sell them. Plan to make gold from materials and consumables, and to use your armor craft for yourself.

What We Still Don’t Know

  • Which crafted items are best in slot at level 60, since the new raids unlock on December 9 and Blizzard hasn’t shown top-end crafted raid gear.
  • Whether professions get passive bonuses. Early reports mentioned bonuses like Mixology for Alchemy, but Zockify found none in the beta data.
  • The Leatherworking bracer armor kits for Spell Power, Attack Power or Stamina, which have been described but aren’t in the beta data as identifiable recipes.
  • Where Blueprint recipes drop, and where new materials such as Azerothium Bar come from.

FAQ

Are there new professions in WoW Forever?

No. WoW Forever has the same twelve professions as Classic, and Jewelcrafting and Inscription are not in the game. The changes are new recipes, Camping objects, and a new role for First Aid and Cooking.

How many professions can you have in WoW Forever?

Two primary professions plus all three secondary skills (Cooking, First Aid and Fishing), so five per character, the same as Classic.

Can First Aid make healing potions in WoW Forever?

Yes. The BlizzCon demo’s First Aid list includes Minor, Lesser and regular Healing Potions, plus curatives for bleeds, poisons and diseases. Alchemy gets Discolored Healing Potions with a drawback instead, according to beta datamining.

What is the best profession for gold in WoW Forever?

Herbalism plus Mining is the safest gold pair at launch, because it needs no investment and sells to every crafter.
