World of Warcraft: Forever launches on November 4, and unlike Tailoring or Leatherworking, it left Engineering’s leveling alone: in the beta client, 167 of the 168 original Engineering recipes turn yellow and grey at exactly the same skill as in Classic. This WoW Forever engineering leveling guide starts from the proven Classic route, trims it with the client’s numbers and counts what 1-300 really takes: about 133 Mithril Bars, 170 Thorium Bars and 300 stone, against 158, 225 and 330 on the standard shopping list.
How solid this is: every threshold comes from SeeMeta’s Forever Engineering table, and we checked each recipe on the route against the game data of the newest beta client (build 1.60.1.70374, October 13) and of Classic Era: all match. Skill 1 to 225 can be tested in the beta, and WoW-Professions tested its route there. Skill 225 to 300 is untested everywhere, because Artisan needs character level 35 and the beta stops at 30. Craft counts are our expected values from Classic’s skill-up formula.
Quick Answer: Engineering 1-300 in WoW Forever
- Route: Rough Blasting Powder to 30, Handful of Copper Bolts to 50, one Arclight Spanner, Rough Copper Bomb to 75, Coarse Blasting Powder to 90, Coarse Dynamite to 100, Silver Contact to 105, Bronze Tube to 125, Heavy Blasting Powder to 141, Whirring Bronze Gizmo to 150, Bronze Framework to 160, Explosive Sheep to 175, Solid Blasting Powder to 194, Iron Grenade to 195, Mithril Tube to 200, Unstable Trigger to 215, Mithril Casing to 237, Hi-Explosive Bomb to 250, Dense Blasting Powder to 260, Thorium Widget to 285, Thorium Tube to 300.
- Materials: about 65 Copper, 111 Bronze, 5 Silver, 133 Mithril and 170 Thorium Bars, 300 stone of all five kinds, 150 cloth and 15 Medium Leather.
- Cost, our estimate: about 9 gold for training, two schematics and Weak Flux. The materials sell to a vendor for about 12.5 gold; launch-week auction prices will be a multiple of that. A miner pays only the 9 gold.
- Gates: Journeyman at skill 50 and level 10, Expert at 125 and level 20 (Ironforge or Orgrimmar only), Artisan at 200 and level 35 (Gadgetzan only, both factions).
- Specialization: Goblin for most players, Gnomish for Gnomes and gadget collectors.
Did Engineering Change in WoW Forever?
Engineering’s skill-up numbers didn’t change in WoW Forever. We compared the 168 original recipes that exist in both the Forever beta client and the Classic Era client (build 1.15.9): 167 have the same yellow and grey thresholds, and Pet Bombling goes grey 5 points later. Our checks for the sister guides found Leatherworking recipes going grey 25 points earlier and most Tailoring recipes 20 to 45 points earlier, so Engineering is the exception among the crafts we’ve checked. WoW-Professions’ note that it kept Classic’s skill ranges holds.
What changed sits around the leveling. Blizzard’s beta development notes through October 8 list no Engineering changes; everything below comes from the beta client’s data:
- Gnome racial: Engineering Specialization no longer adds 15 skill. Its spell text now says it “reduces the rate of engineering devices failing or backfiring”, by 20%. Gnomes level Engineering like everyone else; our WoW Forever best race guide covers the rest of the Gnome kit.
- New recipes: SeeMeta lists 251 Engineering recipes, 75 of them new: explosives anyone can throw, teleporters and gadgets such as the Loot-A-Rang. Zockify counts 28 schematics sold for Merchant’s Favor.
- Camping: three camp objects, a Reagent Bot, a Repair Bot and the Anarchist’s Workbench, which 19 recipes need.
- Specializations: Goblin and Gnomish stay, with their Classic recipes.
WoW Forever Engineering Trainers and Rank Requirements
WoW Forever has engineering trainers in every capital except Darnassus and Thunder Bluff, but Expert is only taught by Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge and Roxxik in Orgrimmar, and Artisan only by Buzzek Bracketswing in Gadgetzan, for both factions (Zockify’s beta trainer data).
| Rank | Skill cap | Requirement | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | 75 | None in the beta per WoW-Professions; level 5 per Icy Veins and Zockify | 10 copper |
| Journeyman | 150 | Skill 50, level 10 | 5 silver |
| Expert | 225 | Skill 125, level 20 | 50 silver |
| Artisan | 300 | Skill 200, level 35 | 5 gold |
Costs are from WoW-Professions. Reaching 150, 225 and 300 each earns one account-wide point for the WoW Forever Legacy System.

WoW Forever Engineering Leveling Route 1-225
The cheapest way to level Engineering from 1 to 225 in WoW Forever is a chain of trainer recipes in which almost every craft feeds a later one: powders and bolts go into bombs, gizmos and frameworks into sheep, triggers into Hi-Explosive Bombs. Until a recipe turns yellow, every craft is a point; at grey, it gives none.
| Skill | Recipe (yellow / grey) | Crafts | Materials |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-30 | Rough Blasting Powder (20 / 40) | 32, make 59 | 59 Rough Stone |
| 30-50 | Handful of Copper Bolts (45 / 60) | 21, make 29 | 29 Copper Bar |
| 50-51 | Arclight Spanner (70 / 90) | 1 | 6 Copper Bar |
| 51-75 | Rough Copper Bomb (60 / 90) | 29 | 29 Copper Bar, 29 Linen Cloth, the bolts and powder |
| 75-90 | Coarse Blasting Powder (85 / 95) | 17, make 47 | 47 Coarse Stone |
| 90-100 | Coarse Dynamite (90 / 105) | 16 | 47 Coarse Blasting Powder, 16 Linen Cloth |
| 100-105 | Silver Contact (110 / 140) | 5 | 5 Silver Bar |
| 105-125 | Bronze Tube (105 / 155) | 25 | 50 Bronze Bar, 25 Weak Flux |
| 125-141 | Heavy Blasting Powder (125 / 145) | 30 | 30 Heavy Stone |
| 141-150 | Whirring Bronze Gizmo (125 / 175) | 15 | 30 Bronze Bar, 15 Wool Cloth |
| 150-160 | Bronze Framework (145 / 195) | 12, make 15 | 30 Bronze Bar, 15 Medium Leather, 15 Wool Cloth |
| 160-175 | Explosive Sheep (175 / 200) | 15 | The frameworks, gizmos and powder, 30 Wool Cloth |
| 175-194 | Solid Blasting Powder (175 / 195) | 52 | 104 Solid Stone |
| 194-195 | Iron Grenade (175 / 215) | 2 | 2 Iron Bar, 2 Heavy Stone, 2 Silk Cloth |
| 195-200 | Mithril Tube (195 / 235) | 5, make 6 | 18 Mithril Bar |
| 200-215 | Unstable Trigger (200 / 240) | 19 | 19 Mithril Bar, 19 Mageweave Cloth, 19 Solid Blasting Powder |
| 215-225 | Mithril Casing (215 / 255) | 11 | 34 Mithril Bar |
Every step is a trainer recipe you can learn by the skill where the step starts. The client doesn’t store trainer learn levels, so these are Classic’s; WoW-Professions’ beta testers confirm them up to 200. Rough Blasting Powder is known as soon as you learn Engineering. Train Expert at 125 and Artisan at 200, and keep a Blacksmith Hammer and the Arclight Spanner from 50 in your bags: most recipes need both.
Our route is WoW-Professions’ beta-tested route with two changes:
- 125-141: they make 10 Standard Scopes from Bronze Tubes and Moss Agate first. We go straight to the 30 Heavy Blasting Powder the Explosive Sheep need anyway: the same skill without 10 gems.
- 194-195: they make a Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor (4 Steel Bars). It’s a tool nothing on this route needs, but the Accurate Scope for the Gnomish quest, the Loot-A-Rang and every goggle from Bright-Eye on do. Make it if you plan Gnomish; otherwise two Iron Grenades are cheaper.
The bigger difference is the shopping list: theirs is padded, ours uses expected craft counts. Buy about 10% extra for the long yellow stretches at 175-195 and 215-250, where bad luck costs most.
Engineering 225-300: The Untested Part
Engineering 225 to 300 in WoW Forever can’t be tested before launch, because Artisan needs character level 35. The thresholds are the beta client’s and match Classic; the route is the standard Classic one, which WoW-Professions also uses.
| Skill | Recipe (yellow / grey) | Crafts | Materials | Recipe from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 225-237 | Mithril Casing (215 / 255) | 20, make 33 in all | 60 Mithril Bar | Trainer, 215 |
| 237-250 | Hi-Explosive Bomb (235 / 275) | 17 | 33 Mithril Casing, 16 Unstable Trigger, 33 Solid Blasting Powder | Trainer, 235 |
| 250-260 | Dense Blasting Powder (250 / 260) | 29 | 59 Dense Stone | Trainer, 250 |
| 260-285 | Thorium Widget (280 / 300) | 26 | 77 Thorium Bar, 26 Runecloth | Schematic, skill 260 |
| 285-300 | Thorium Tube (295 / 315) | 16 | 94 Thorium Bar | Schematic, skill 275, bind on pickup |
Zockify lists both schematic sources as not known yet. In Classic, Gearcutter Cogspinner in Ironforge sold the Thorium Widget schematic (classicdb); WoW-Professions names Sovik in Orgrimmar for the Horde and Xizzer Fizzbolt in Everlook for Thorium Tube, which the beta client marks bind on pickup. If you find Schematic: Thorium Shells, a rare world drop in Classic, use it from 285: orange until 305, it costs 2 Thorium Bars and 1 spare Dense Blasting Powder per point and saves about 60 Thorium Bars.
Engineering 1-300 Shopping List
The WoW Forever Engineering shopping list for our route, from expected craft counts, next to the list WoW-Professions publishes for the same steps.
| Material | 1-225 | 225-300 | Our total | Standard list |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rough Stone | 59 | 59 | 60 | |
| Coarse Stone | 47 | 47 | 60 | |
| Heavy Stone | 32 | 32 | 30 | |
| Solid Stone | 104 | 104 | 120 | |
| Dense Stone | 59 | 59 | 60 | |
| Copper Bar | 65 | 65 | 66 | |
| Bronze Bar | 111 | 111 | 110 | |
| Silver Bar | 5 | 5 | 5 | |
| Iron Bar / Steel Bar | 2 / 0 | 2 / 0 | 0 / 4 | |
| Mithril Bar | 68 | 65 | 133 | 158 |
| Thorium Bar | 170 | 170 | 225 | |
| Moss Agate | 0 | 10 | ||
| Linen / Wool / Silk Cloth | 45 / 60 / 2 | 45 / 60 / 2 | 50 / 60 / 0 | |
| Mageweave / Runecloth | 19 / 0 | 0 / 26 | 19 / 26 | 20 / 35 |
| Medium Leather | 15 | 15 | 15 | |
| Weak Flux (1 silver) | 25 | 25 | 25 |
Our cost estimate: the four ranks cost 5 gold 55 silver, the two schematics about 2 gold 80 silver at their client prices, the Weak Flux 25 silver. At vendor sell prices the ore, stone, cloth and leather come to about 12.5 gold, 4 gold to 225 and 8.5 gold after, and about 60% of that is Thorium and Mithril. Auction prices in launch week will be a multiple of vendor value.
Ore and Stone Needed per Bracket
WoW Forever Engineering needs ore at every stage, and the demand climbs the ore tiers with your skill: Copper to 100, Copper and Tin for Bronze from 100 to 175, Solid Stone at 175-195, Mithril from 195 to 250 and Thorium from 260. Mining is the natural partner, and our WoW Forever mining leveling guide has the vein routes.

If you mine for yourself, Engineering waits on Mining twice: it needs Mithril from 195, which takes Mining 175, and Thorium from 260, which takes Mining 245. Smelting those bars gives no Mining skill in Forever.
Goblin or Gnomish Engineering in WoW Forever?
WoW Forever keeps both Engineering specializations with their Classic recipes and thresholds, and the beta client still locks the two signature teleporters: only Gnomish engineers can use the Ultrasafe Transporter to Gadgetzan, only Goblin engineers the Dimensional Ripper to Everlook. Our pick for most players is Goblin; Gnomish makes sense for Gnomes and for gadget collectors.
| Gnomish | Goblin | |
|---|---|---|
| Teleport (specialization only) | Gadgetzan | Everlook |
| Signature items (Classic) | Death Ray, Battle Chicken, Mind Control Cap, Net-o-Matic Projector | Sapper Charge, Bomb Dispenser, Dragon Gun, Mortar |
| Locked schematics in the beta client | World Enlarger, Gnomish Alarm-O-Bot | Goblin Jumper Cables XL |
| Trainers | Tinkmaster Overspark (Ironforge), Oglethorpe Obnoticus (Booty Bay) | Nixx Sprocketspring (Gadgetzan), Vazario Linkgrease (Ratchet), Melbin Powderfuse (Powderfuse Port, new) |
| Quest items (Classic) | 6 Mithril Tubes, 1 Accurate Scope, 2 Advanced Target Dummies | 20 Big Iron Bombs, 20 Solid Dynamite, 5 Explosive Sheep |
Why Goblin: in Classic only Goblin engineers made Goblin Sapper Charges, the reason many raiders and battleground players picked it, and Forever adds a second reason: Mount Hyjal, the new level 60 zone, is reached from Winterspring, and Everlook is Winterspring’s town. Why Gnomish: the Gnome racial cuts device failures by 20%, which pays off most on what the client calls “fantastic, yet unreliable gnomish devices”. Any engineer with skill 205 can use Sapper Charges, so buying them covers part of the gap.
New in Forever, both teleporters get versions anyone can use. At the Anarchist’s Workbench an engineer at 300 turns an Ultrasafe Transporter and an EZ-Thro Shell into the EZ-Thro Field Transporter: Gadgetzan, and a Dimensional Ripper and two SAF-T Tubes into the SAF-T Emergency Ripper: Everlook. Both need level 55 and no Engineering, with 3 charges and a 4-hour cooldown. A new Dimensional Transporter to Mount Hyjal (Engineering 300, level 60) isn’t tied to a specialization. All three schematic sources are unknown. In Classic you specialize at skill 200 and level 30; WoW-Professions expects the same quests in Forever but hasn’t tested them.
New Engineering Gadgets in WoW Forever
Most new WoW Forever Engineering gadgets are Merchant’s Favor schematics from skill 250 up. What they do, per the beta client’s item data:
| Item | What it does | How you get it |
|---|---|---|
| Loot-A-Rang | Retrieves the loot from a nearby corpse, 3-second cooldown, not used up. Rare, needs Engineering 250 and level 50 | 270 Favor, craft at 275 from 5 Thorium Bars and 5 Greater Eternal Essence |
| Gnomish Army Knife | Counts as Arclight Spanner, Micro-Adjustor, Blacksmith Hammer, Mining Pick, Skinning Knife, Flint and Tinder and Jeweler’s Tools. Level 45, no profession needed, doesn’t bind | 270 Favor, skill 250 |
| Satchels of Copper, Bronze, Iron and Dark Iron Bombs | Thrown weapons whose attacks explode for Fire damage around the target. Bind on pickup, need Engineering 85, 165, 230 or 285 | 45, 180, 270 or 270 Favor; 20 bombs each |
| SAF-T and EZ-Thro explosives | Dynamite, bombs and grenades without an Engineering requirement, so non-engineers can use them | 45 to 180 Favor, several unknown |
| Dimensional Transporter: Mt. Hyjal | Teleports you to Kaylaena’s Workshop on Mount Hyjal, 4-hour cooldown | Unknown, skill 300 |
| Gnomish Poultryizer, Stealthman 52, Ultralight Goblin Glider | Chicken polymorph, stealth field, a glider | 360 Favor each |
Is the Rockslicer an Engineering item?
No. Zockify lists a Rockslicer that mines Copper, Tin, Silver and Iron Veins without Mining, 30 charges, and our mining guide found no item of that name in the beta client. The client’s item data ties that Slicing effect, with 30 charges, to item number 872, which in Classic is the Rockslicer, an uncommon level 16 weapon. Forever’s item data has no entry for it and no Engineering recipe makes it, so how you get it is unknown.
Engineering Camp Objects: Reagent Bot, Repair Bot and Workbench
Blizzard’s systems panel recap promises campsites with “vendors, repairs, profession workspaces”, and Engineering’s three camp objects are exactly that. Most other professions’ camp objects give a buff; these don’t.
- Reagent Bot (skill 20; a trainer recipe per SeeMeta, and the client has no schematic for it; a Handful of Copper Bolts and a Copper Tube): lets you and others nearby buy reagents. It goes grey at 25, and Copper Tube is a skill 50 recipe in Classic, so it gives no skill in practice; make one from spares later. What it sells is unknown.
- Repair Bot (Blueprint from Sneed in the Deadmines, per Zockify; skill 140; 2 Whirring Bronze Gizmos, a Bronze Tube, a Heavy Leather): reagents plus repairs, and it replaces a placed Reagent Bot. Made at 140 it’s worth a point and uses one of your spare tubes.
- Anarchist’s Workbench (Blueprint, skill 300, source unknown; an Essence of Anarchy and 2 Thorium Widgets): a workspace for 19 recipes in the client data, among them four new level 30 belts learned at 175, four level 40 goggles learned at 200, and the transporters above.
Each object is used up when placed, needs a campfire and shares a one-hour cooldown with all camp objects (item data). The catch: the belts and goggles are learned long before you can build the bench, and whether you can use another engineer’s is unknown.
Merchant’s Favor, Craftsman’s Writs and Legacy Points
Zockify counts 28 Engineering schematics for Merchant’s Favor in WoW Forever: 7 at 45 Favor, 10 at 180, 7 at 270 and 4 at 360. You earn Favor from Waylaid Crates and spend it at the camps at Three Corners in Redridge (10.5, 72.7) or west of the Crossroads in the Barrens (49.7, 29.5). None is needed for the route. At 300, 1,000 Favor buys the Engineering Certification and the account-wide title “the Engineer”.
Craftsman’s Writs are tradeable crafting orders worth 75 to 200 reputation with the Azeroth Commerce Authority or Durotar Supply and Logistics. Three of the 30 Engineering writs ask for things you make on the way: Explosive Sheep, Unstable Trigger and Gyromatic Micro-Adjustor, so keep spares. The Legacy perk Working Overtime raises skill-up chances by up to 20%, which cuts the yellow crafts in our counts.
What to Keep and Use While Leveling Engineering
- Bombs and grenades: Rough Copper Bombs, Iron Grenades and Hi-Explosive Bombs stun what they hit, on a shared one-minute cooldown. Like in Classic they need Engineering skill to use, so they’re for you; the SAF-T and EZ-Thro versions are the ones to sell.
- Explosive Sheep: keep 5 for the Goblin quest and a few for writs. Your 29 Rough Copper Bombs cover a Satchel of Copper Bombs.
- Bronze Tubes: about 25 spare, for a Repair Bot or Standard Scopes, which any hunter can attach.
- Target dummies: the Advanced Target Dummy pulls nearby monsters for 15 seconds; the Gnomish quest needs two.
- Thorium Widgets: keep 2 for the Anarchist’s Workbench and 2 for a Gnomish Army Knife.
What We Don’t Know Yet
- Trainer learn levels in Forever. We use Classic’s; WoW-Professions confirmed them to 200, except Heavy Blasting Powder at 125, which they first used at 135.
- Where the Thorium Widget, Thorium Tube, Workbench and transporter schematics come from in Forever.
- Whether the specialization quests and requirements are unchanged, and whether the new transporter recipes are open to both specializations.
- What the Reagent Bot sells, and whether others can use your workbench.
- Whether Forever’s skill-up chances follow Classic’s formula. Our craft counts assume they do.
FAQ
Where is the engineering trainer in WoW Forever?
Every capital except Darnassus and Thunder Bluff has Apprentice and Journeyman engineering trainers in WoW Forever, such as Thund and Nogg in Orgrimmar’s Valley of Honor. Expert is taught only by Springspindle Fizzlegear in Ironforge and Roxxik in Orgrimmar, Artisan only by Buzzek Bracketswing in Gadgetzan.
Should I choose Goblin or Gnomish Engineering in WoW Forever?
Goblin for most players: it makes Sapper Charges and teleports to Everlook, Winterspring’s town on the way to Mount Hyjal. Gnomish suits Gnomes, whose racial cuts device failures by 20%, and players who want the Battle Chicken, Death Ray and the Gadgetzan teleporter.
Do Gnomes get bonus Engineering skill in WoW Forever?
No. In WoW Forever the Gnome racial Engineering Specialization makes engineering devices fail or backfire 20% less often instead of adding 15 skill, per the beta client’s spell data.
Does Engineering have a camp buff in WoW Forever?
No. Engineering’s camp objects are a Reagent Bot that sells reagents, a Repair Bot that also repairs, and the Anarchist’s Workbench for 19 recipes. The buffs come from other professions’ camp objects, listed in our WoW Forever professions guide.
