The Hall of Thanes is the first new dungeon most Alliance players will see in World of Warcraft: Forever: a level 13 to 18 crypt of old dwarf kings under Ironforge, overrun by Dark Iron looters. It has four bosses, five quests and twelve blue boss drops, and it is playable in the beta according to Blizzard’s October 1 development notes. To get in, walk into King Magni’s throne room, turn left into the cobwebbed passage at 43.5, 52.0, and follow it down past a bridge to the portal at about 27.8, 47.9.
This guide covers one complete run: the Dun Morogh breadcrumb, all five quests, the bosses, the loot by class, and what the quests pay after Blizzard’s October 1 cut to dungeon quest XP.
Beta note: coordinates, quest data and item stats below come from beta data sites (October 1 build and later), named each time. WoW Forever launches November 4, and Blizzard can retune any of it before then. Updated October 15: the quest XP section now treats the lower, post-cut values as the likely ones, based on the City of Dalaran’s quest data.
Hall of Thanes Location: How to Get to the Entrance
The Hall of Thanes entrance is in Old Ironforge, under the High Seat. Two spots matter: the passage where the walk starts (43.5, 52.0 per Warcraft Tavern and kami-labs; Zockify has 44.5, 49.4) and the instance portal below, at about 27.8, 47.9 on the Ironforge map. Only wowhandbook gives the portal coordinate, but it fits Zockify’s directions and the quest givers next to it.
- Fly to Ironforge (gryphon master at the Great Forge, 55.5, 47.8) or take the Deeprun Tram from Stormwind.
- From the Great Forge, walk west into the High Seat and turn left into the cobwebbed passage.
- Downstairs, go up the first stairs on your left, then take the path leading down (Zockify). The way runs along lava, and a fall is lethal (Warcraft Tavern).
- Take the quests from Afadra Dunwall above the entrance gate and Thom Filch at the bridge, then cross the bridge to the portal.

For the other new dungeons and their entrances, see our WoW Forever new dungeon locations guide.
Hall of Thanes Level and Requirements
The Hall of Thanes is a level 13 to 18 dungeon, per Blizzard’s dungeon list (quoted by Icy Veins). In the beta client the Group Finder offers it from level 13, and every boss drop requires level 13.
| What | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Level range | 13 to 18 | Blizzard |
| Group Finder level | 13 | Beta client (kami-labs, wowforevertalents) |
| Accept the quests | Level 9 (Old Ironforge Incursion, Treaty) or 10 (the other three) | Icy Veins, wowhandbook |
| Quest levels | 15 and 16 | Beta client (wowhandbook, wowforevertalents) |
| Boss loot | Item level 18, requires level 13 | wowhandbook |
| Layout | 5 players, 4 bosses, one linear path | Zockify, wowhandbook |
| Lockout | None in the beta so far | kami-labs, wowforevertalents |
Go at level 14 to 16 with all five quests in your log. Under Classic rules, quest XP drops once you are more than five levels above the quest (level 21 here); we found no report on whether Forever changed that.
Hall of Thanes Quests: All Five, Where They Start and End
The Hall of Thanes has five quests. Three start outside the instance (two at the portal, one in Dun Morogh) and two start inside. Quest numbers match the maps.
| # | Quest | Starts at | Accept at | Task | Turn in to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Important Heirlooms | Thom Filch, Ironforge 32.6, 44.6, at the bridge before the portal | 10 | Collect 8 Dwarven Heirlooms from urns and chests | Thom Filch |
| 2 | The Restless Dead | Afadra Dunwall, Ironforge, above the entrance gate (Zockify 32.8, 48.0; wowhandbook 33.2, 47.6; Icy Veins 34.0, 48.8) | 10 | Kill 15 Enraged Apparitions and 10 Tormented Souls, put Anvilmar’s spirit to rest | Afadra Dunwall |
| 3 | Old Ironforge Incursion | Earthseer Farsen, Dun Morogh 64.8, 58.4, after Underground Map | 9 | Loot Durgen Dirgehammer’s Head from the last boss | King Magni, Ironforge 40.0, 55.2 |
| 4 | An Ancient Grudge | Ghostly Attendant, inside, second room (west wing) | 10 | Kill Faldrim Anvilmar | Ghostly Attendant |
| 5 | The Treaty of Understanding | Tablet behind a vault door in Durgen’s room | 9 | Bring the tablet out | King Magni |
Heirlooms sit on candle-lit platforms in the corridors, and the vaults in the last room hold enough for everyone (Warcraft Tavern, Icy Veins). One run covers the ghost count for The Restless Dead, and you pass the Ghostly Attendant again on the way out. Icy Veins lists every quest except the Treaty as shareable.
Old Ironforge Incursion: The Dun Morogh Breadcrumb
Old Ironforge Incursion is the only Hall of Thanes quest you can’t pick up at the dungeon. It ends a short chain in eastern Dun Morogh that opens at level 9, so grab it while you’re questing there.
- Beldin Steelgrill at Steelgrill’s Depot, next to Kharanos, sends you to Earthseer Farsen (A Visitor to Dun Morogh). Only wowhandbook lists this step; Warcraft Tavern and Zockify start the chain at Farsen, so it is probably optional.
- Earthseer Farsen, on the hill above Gol’Bolar Quarry (64.8, 58.4), gives Farsen’s Watch and Nip ‘Em in the Bud: kill 10 Dark Iron Spies at Ironband’s Compound, around 76.7, 60.7.
- A spy drops the Dark Iron Map, which starts Underground Map. Bring it to Farsen. Zockify doesn’t tie the drop to Nip ‘Em in the Bud, Warcraft Tavern and wowhandbook do, so take that quest first to be safe.
- Farsen gives you Old Ironforge Incursion. Hold it until your group goes in.

Can Horde Do the Hall of Thanes?
Horde players can enter the Hall of Thanes, and the beta client data points to two quests they can take: Important Heirlooms and An Ancient Grudge. Nobody has shown a Horde player completing either, and the trip means crossing Alliance land at level 13 to 18 and walking into Ironforge’s throne room. The evidence:
- For two Horde quests: wowforevertalents reads quests from the beta client’s quest cache and marks only The Restless Dead as Alliance. Icy Veins and wowhandbook mark three as Alliance-only and leave Important Heirlooms and An Ancient Grudge open. Method’s text names the same two.
- A telling detail: Important Heirlooms rewards Gadgetzan reputation, a neutral goblin faction. The Alliance-only quests pay Ironforge or Gnomeregan Exiles reputation.
- Against: Zockify says all five are Alliance-only and Warcraft Tavern says Horde gets none, both as blanket statements without per-quest data.
- Alliance either way: Old Ironforge Incursion and the Treaty end at King Magni.
Our read: two quests, worth about 5,300 XP after the October 1 cut by our estimate (8,150 by wowhandbook’s numbers, which most likely predate the cut). Thom Filch stands in Old Ironforge, past the throne room guards, and whether he talks to Horde is untested. Method describes the trek from the Undercity through Hillsbrad, Arathi, the Wetlands and Loch Modan, and found no sign of a rumored Horde teleporter quest. Ragefire Chasm and the Ruins of Lordaeron are far better Horde picks at these levels (see our WoW Forever dungeons by level list).
Hall of Thanes Bosses: Order and Tactics
The Hall of Thanes has four bosses on one linear path: Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus, Plunder and Durgen Dirgehammer. Undead dwarves fill the first wing; after Faldrim come Dark Iron dwarves, fire elementals and golems. Tactics below are beta-tested, from Warcraft Tavern, Icy Veins, Method and wowhandbook.
Trash worth respecting after the first boss:
- Dark Iron Summoners cast Fireball and summon a fire elemental. Interrupt and kill them first.
- Dark Iron Engineers throw bombs at a spot chosen when the cast starts. Step out.
- Bloodhound Runts apply Infected Wounds, a 5-minute disease that raises physical damage taken. Stoneform or a Simple Poultice removes it.
- Seaforium Blasting Powder kegs stand next to several packs. Shoot them from range, especially the two beside the four-dwarf pack before Plunder.
Faldrim Anvilmar
Faldrim circles his tomb in Anvilmar’s Rest. He doesn’t link with the ghosts around him, but his patrol drags you into them, so clear a space first. He casts an interruptible Mind Blast and Anvilmar’s Curse on the tank: 20% slower attacks and casts for 10 minutes. Remove it if anyone can; most groups at this level can’t, and the fight is easy anyway.
Magmatus
Magmatus, a fire elemental in the natural cavern (the beta client still calls him Infurnus), fights alongside a Dark Iron Summoner. Kill the patrolling Summoner before the pull, then the one at the boss, while the tank drags Magmatus away from the group. He pulses Fire Nova and casts Combustion, a fire damage-over-time, on a random player. Ranged stay out of melee range; healers watch the whole melee group.
Plunder
Plunder, a stone golem, patrols the hallway before the last room. His main move is a knockback (wowhandbook adds a charge and stun). Tank him with your back to a wall or pull him into the previous room, so nobody gets knocked into a fresh pack.
Durgen Dirgehammer
Durgen patrols the Reliquary of Kings with two Lesser Stone Golems, which hit hard and move fast. Clear the Dark Iron Looters around the room first. Durgen casts an AoE fear (8 seconds, per Method) and puts Rend on the tank. Warcraft Tavern and Icy Veins kill the golems first, Method burns Durgen first; with a struggling tank or healer, take the golems first. A Shaman’s Tremor Totem handles the fear.
Afterwards, open the vault doors around the room: one holds the Treaty tablet, the others hold Dwarven Heirlooms. Turn in An Ancient Grudge on the way out.
Hall of Thanes Loot: Best Drops by Class
Every Hall of Thanes boss drop is a blue (rare) item, item level 18, bind on pickup, requiring level 13. The quest rewards were blue too, at item level 17 and 18, but the October 8 build lowered “various dungeon quest rewards” to green (Uncommon) with adjusted stats without naming them, so expect some of these to be green at launch. Stats below are beta data from wowhandbook; the boss assignments match Zockify, Icy Veins and Method.
| Boss | Item | Type | Stats | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Faldrim Anvilmar | Aetherwisp Bracers | Cloth wrist | +3 Stamina, +3 spell power | Casters |
| Faldrim Anvilmar | Spiritwraith Drape | Cloak | +4 Agility, +3 Spirit | Rogues, hunters, feral druids |
| Faldrim Anvilmar | Ephemeral Choker | Neck | +4 Stamina, +2 Spirit | Anyone |
| Magmatus | Fang of Magmatus | Main-hand dagger | +4 Intellect, +18 spell power | Casters |
| Magmatus | Flamefist Grips | Leather hands | +2 Strength, +4 Agility, +4 Spirit | Rogues, druids |
| Magmatus | Kindlegem Girdle | Mail waist | +4 Strength, +4 Stamina | Warriors, paladins |
| Plunder | Golemheart Stave | Staff | +6 Intellect, +3 Stamina, +5 Spirit, +18 spell power | Casters |
| Plunder | Golemguard Chest | Mail chest | +4 Strength, +6 Stamina, +4 Spirit | Warriors, paladins |
| Plunder | Treads of the Protector Golem | Mail feet | +5 Strength, +4 Spirit | Warriors, paladins |
| Durgen Dirgehammer | Durgen’s Crescent Axe | Main-hand axe, 12.3 DPS | +2 Strength, +1 Agility, +1 Spirit | Warriors, paladins, shamans |
| Durgen Dirgehammer | Direhammer Leggings | Leather legs | +4 Agility, +7 Stamina | Rogues, druids, hunters |
| Durgen Dirgehammer | Robes of the Disgraced Thane | Cloth chest | +5 Intellect, +7 Spirit | Priests, mages, warlocks |
Mail goes to warriors and paladins because in Classic, hunters and shamans learn Mail only at level 40. Quest rewards:
- Old Ironforge Incursion: Deepblaze (wand, 18.5 DPS, the highest DPS of any weapon here), Ironforge Greathammer (two-handed mace, 16.0 DPS, +4 Strength, +7 Stamina) or Calibrated Blunderbuss (gun, 9.6 DPS, +3 Stamina).
- Important Heirlooms: Tomb Robber’s Gloves (cloth, +6 Intellect, +3 Stamina) or Dwarven Tome (off-hand, +2 Spirit, +5 spell power).
- An Ancient Grudge: Catacomb Cloak (+3 Stamina, +6 attack power, +4 more against humanoids) or Deepgrave Trousers (leather, +7 Strength, +3 Agility, +3 Spirit).
- The Restless Dead: Dusty Belt (leather, +5 Agility, +4 Spirit) or Cryptwalker Bracers (mail, +4 Strength, +3 Stamina).
Casters gain the most: two spell power weapons from bosses, plus Deepblaze and Tomb Robber’s Gloves from quests.
How Much XP the Hall of Thanes Quests Give After the October 1 Cut
The five Hall of Thanes quests most likely pay about 13,300 XP together after Blizzard’s October 1 cut, close to one level at level 15. wowhandbook lists 20,550, roughly 3.4 times what normal quests of that level give, but those numbers most likely predate the cut. Here is the math both ways.
| Quest | Normal quest value (beta client) | Listed reward (wowhandbook) |
|---|---|---|
| Important Heirlooms | 1,350 | 4,600 |
| Old Ironforge Incursion | 1,450 | 4,950 |
| The Restless Dead | 1,050 | 3,550 |
| An Ancient Grudge | 1,050 | 3,550 |
| The Treaty of Understanding | Not listed (about 1,150, our estimate) | 3,900 |
| Total | About 6,050 | 20,550 |
The normal values come from the client’s quest tables as listed by wowforevertalents. Blizzard’s October 1 notes say dungeon quests “now reward 50% less extra experience beyond normal quest values”, so the cut halves only the bonus on top of the normal value. Neither site says which build its numbers come from, but the City of Dalaran points to the older one: its quests pay 9,400 XP each in the beta client’s quest data of October 13 (wowforevertalents), only 2.4 times the normal level 33 value of 3,950, which is what a 3.75 times reward comes to once the bonus is halved.
- If wowhandbook’s numbers are from before the cut (most likely), the bonus is now +120% (it was +240%), and the five quests pay about 13,300 XP, close to one level at level 15 (14,400 XP to reach 16 on the Classic curve, which Blizzard says is unchanged).
- If they are from after October 1, the bonus is now +240% and was +480% before. All five quests pay 20,550 XP, about 1.4 levels at level 15.
Either way, one run with all five quests is worth 11 to 17 ordinary level 15 quests (our estimate from the table). The mobs add little: Blizzard’s Kris Zierhut said dungeon monster XP was brought “way down” (interview quoted by Warcraft Tavern); the October 8 build raised it again by about 20%. Take every quest, run it once, and don’t farm it for levels. For where this run fits into a full route, see our WoW Forever leveling guide.
FAQ
What level is the Hall of Thanes in WoW Forever?
Levels 13 to 18. The Group Finder offers it from level 13, its quests can be accepted from level 9 or 10, and the quests themselves are level 15 and 16.
Is the Hall of Thanes in WoW Classic?
No. The Hall of Thanes is one of the nine new dungeons in WoW Forever. Classic Ironforge has no dungeon under the High Seat.
Does the Hall of Thanes have a lockout?
Not in the beta so far: groups can run it again right away (kami-labs, wowforevertalents). The beta client also holds a daily-lockout version of the instance that nobody has seen in use, so the rules at launch are unknown.
