WoW Forever vs Classic is the choice every vanilla player faces before November 4, and it’s simpler than it looks. Classic Era replays World of Warcraft as it stood at patch 1.12 in 2006, with all of its content long released. World of Warcraft: Forever keeps Classic’s level 60 pace and the original continents, adds new zones, nine new dungeons, reworked classes and a new race, and Blizzard plans to keep adding to it. Retail is the modern game: level 90 in Midnight, Mythic+, arenas and flying.

So is WoW Forever Classic or retail? It’s a separate third version that plays like Classic on a modern client, and one subscription covers all three. Below: a comparison table, the differences topic by topic, and who should play which. For the basics, see our WoW Forever overview and FAQ.

How solid is this? Forever details come from Blizzard’s announcements, developer interviews and the beta (until October 21, capped at level 30). Beta findings are labeled. Classic and retail facts are as of October 18, 2026.

WoW Forever vs Classic vs Retail at a Glance

“Classic” here means the versions still running the original level 60 game: Classic Era and the Hardcore realms. The 20th Anniversary Normal and PvP realms moved on to The Burning Crusade with the January 13, 2026 pre-patch, and only the Anniversary Hardcore realm stayed behind, according to Warcraft Wiki. Retail means the current expansion, Midnight, out since March 2, 2026.

World and Content: Classic Is Finished, Forever Keeps Growing

WoW Forever is the only version with content a Classic veteran hasn’t seen. Blizzard’s What’s Next panel recap promises more than a thousand new quests across levels 1 to 60 and four new zones: Mount Hyjal, Shen’dralas between Mulgore and Desolace, the Riverglades for the mid-30s to mid-40s, and Zephras Isle, the Skyborne start for levels 1 to 12. The story stays frozen before Molten Core, and a Blizzard developer said on Twitch on September 13 that Forever doesn’t share a timeline with modern WoW, as Warcraft Wiki records.

Classic Era is the 1.12 world, with every phase up to Naxxramas out for years. Retail spans every expansion, the old world as Cataclysm rebuilt it, Midnight’s rebuilt Eversong Woods and Zul’Aman, and player housing. What it means: if you’ve leveled through Westfall and the Barrens a dozen times, Forever is where a level 35 character can still find a zone nobody has mapped out.

Leveling Speed: Forever Plays at Classic Pace

WoW Forever levels at Classic speed. Principal Designer Kris Zierhut told The Sun that the experience curve is unchanged, and on the WoW Forever Podcast the developers said beta players took 20.5 hours on average to reach level 20, against 20.4 hours in Classic, as Icy Veins reported. Lower-level mobs give less XP, dungeon quests more, and crafted food adds 5% to kill XP; our WoW Forever XP changes breakdown nets that out at about 1% faster than Classic. Associate Production Director Clay Stone said there are no plans for character boosts or the WoW Token, as Warcraft Tavern reported.

Classic Era runs at the same pace, and on Hardcore one death ends the character. Retail treats leveling as a short run-up: zones scale to you, you pick which expansion to level through, and boosts are for sale. Game director Ion Hazzikostas called it “a challenging pitch” to ask retail players to spend dozens of hours leveling to catch up with friends, Windows Central reports.

Classes and Talents: Same Nine Classes, Rebalanced

WoW Forever keeps Classic’s nine classes and three trees each, but reworks nearly every spec. Blizzard’s systems panel recap lists a new 16-point milestone talent, buff talents such as Blessing of Kings made baseline, one combined hit stat and one crit stat, and healing gear that also adds a third as much damage. Every race gets two active and two passive racials, six race and class combos are new (Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock, Undead Paladin), and the Skyborne join both factions. An unofficial client comparison by ForeverChanges counts 113 new talents.

Classic Era keeps the 1.12 talents, where hybrid damage specs rarely got raid spots and raiders farmed world buffs. Windows Central’s summary of its Hazzikostas interview says Forever rebalances specs so every class is viable and drops world buff farming; Blizzard hasn’t detailed how. Retail has 13 classes, hero talents and free spec swaps. In Forever, Blizzard’s class articles confirm Dual Specialization at level 40, and you respec at a class trainer in a major city.

What it means: if you played a spec Classic left behind (Protection Paladin, Enhancement Shaman, Shadow Priest), Forever gives it a real job, and our WoW Forever class changes guide names the biggest change for each class. For 1.12’s exact balance, stay on Classic Era.

Professions: Same Twelve, Much More to Craft

WoW Forever keeps Classic’s twelve professions and the 300 cap, and adds over 600 recipes, food with a small XP bonus, Blueprints from dungeon bosses, and Camping, where crafted objects at a campfire give everyone sitting there a one-hour buff. Old routes won’t fit: in the beta client’s data, most Blacksmithing and Leatherworking recipes go grey 25 points earlier than in Classic Era and most Tailoring recipes 20 to 45 points earlier, while Enchanting and Engineering keep Classic’s ranges (our comparison of the two clients). Retail gives each expansion its own profession skill, with specializations, crafting orders and quality ranks.

Dungeons, Raids and Group Finding

WoW Forever has the Classic dungeons plus nine new ones, from Hall of Thanes (levels 13 to 18) to Shaper’s Terrace (58 to 60). The Group Finder lists groups (Blizzard’s October 8 beta notes added a voice chat option), but nothing queues you or teleports you. In a developer Q&A just before the beta, summarized by Warcraft Tavern, the team ruled out heroic difficulties, flexible raid sizes, cross-faction raids and GDKP runs.

Raids open on December 9, five weeks after launch: Barrow Deeps (10 players), Hyjal Summit (20) and Onyxia’s Lair (40). Molten Core, Blackwing Lair and Naxxramas aren’t on the roadmap. Classic Era has every original raid open, with the same do-it-yourself grouping. Retail queues you for dungeons and Looking for Raid, adds Mythic+ keys, and has small solo instances with an NPC companion.

What it means: Hazzikostas told Windows Central that Heroic or Mythic raiding and pushing keys are “not what Forever is going to be about,” and that without matchmaking, a dungeon on your lunch break is something “you likely can’t” do.

PvP: Battlegrounds and Seasons, No Arena

WoW Forever keeps world PvP and Classic’s Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin and Alterac Valley, and adds Darkspear Islands, a 15 vs 15 battleground off Kalimdor’s coast that mixes control points with Arathi Basin-style flag captures, per Blizzard. Icy Veins’ PvP overview says it opens at level 30, and that Classic’s weekly honor ranking against your whole realm, with decay, is replaced by a seasonal rank track without decay. In the developer Q&A, the team said it has no current plans for rated PvP, and there’s no arena, as in Classic. Retail alone has arenas, rated battlegrounds and Solo Shuffle.

What it means: Forever suits battleground and world PvP players who never wanted to give their evenings to Rank 14. Ladder players stay on retail.

WoW Forever vs Classic Graphics, UI and Addons

WoW Forever can look almost like Classic or almost like retail, and you pick on first launch. According to the developer Q&A, the Classic preset turns on the SD (original) character models and turns off transmog and quest tracking. The Enhanced preset, as Out of Games’ beta first look lists it, turns on HD models, quest markers on the map, one combined bag, transmog, strafe keybinds and a centered UI. You can change every setting later.

Even in SD, Forever’s world isn’t Classic Era’s. Blizzard added new lighting, flowing rivers in Elwynn Forest and mist over Darkshore, and restored Classic animations for the HD models. Classic Era shows only the original 2004 models.

Forever also uses the modern addon API, which blocks addons that play the game for you, and builds in a damage meter, a cooldown tracker and a swing timer, per the Q&A. In the beta client, Forever’s addon interface follows retail’s, so Classic Era addons need Forever updates. Gamepad support is official.

Cost: One Subscription for All Three

WoW Forever needs only a WoW subscription or Game Time ($14.99 a month in the US), the same one that covers retail and Classic, per Blizzard’s pre-purchase announcement. Only the Skyborne race needs a pack, from $29.99. Retail also needs the current expansion, Midnight (the Base Edition was $49.99 at pre-order). One account plays one version at a time. Our WoW Forever editions comparison covers whether a pack is worth it.

Future Content: Forever’s Roadmap vs Classic and Retail

WoW Forever is the only one of the three with new level 60 content on a schedule. Blizzard’s BlizzCon roadmap:

WhenWoW Forever update
December 9, 2026Raids: Barrow Deeps (10), Hyjal Summit (20), Onyxia’s Lair (40)
Winter (no date)Hardcore ruleset
Spring 20272 raids, 2 dungeons, new quests and area, legendary questline, PvP season
Summer 2027Revamped iconic raid, new raid, 2 dungeons, world content, profession and Legacy updates

Blizzard hasn’t announced a level cap increase: the updates add raids, dungeons, PvP and quests inside the 1 to 60 game, and more race and class combinations are planned. Classic Era and Hardcore have no new content announced, and Warcraft Tavern noted on September 17 that Blizzard has avoided saying what comes after The Burning Crusade on the Anniversary realms, or after Mists of Pandaria Classic’s final phase. Retail continues with Eclipse (patch 12.2), Midnight’s last major update, then The Last Titan; Blizzard’s BlizzCon opening ceremony recap promises more on it early in 2027.

Is WoW Forever Classic Plus?

Yes, in the sense players meant it, with more changes than many pictured. Classic Plus (or Classic+) is a community term, not a Blizzard product: original WoW at level 60 getting new zones, dungeons and raids instead of moving on to The Burning Crusade. Warcraft Wiki notes that the community calls Forever Classic+, and that its internal codename was Camelot.

Blizzard’s path ran through Season of Discovery. Clay Stone told PC Gamer on October 9 that the 2023 season was “a wonderful testing ground,” and that its success started talks about a version not pitched as a season. The smallest form of the idea, he said: “We give paladins a taunt, and presto change-o, you got Classic Plus or WoW Forever.” The internal pitch started at four new dungeons and grew to nine. Hazzikostas drew the line from the other side: “this isn’t ‘Classic,'” he told Windows Central, adding that Classic remains.

Forever goes past the common wish: reworked classes and racials, itemization aimed at “unsolving” the path through the game, as Blizzard puts it, rulesets instead of realms, optional transmog and HD models, and account-wide Legacy progression. If you wanted no changes plus new zones, you get the zones and, with the Classic preset, the look, but not 1.12’s class balance. And it’s a fresh start: no way to bring Classic characters over has been announced.

WoW Forever, Classic or Retail: Who Should Play Which

Play WoW Forever if

  • You’ve leveled the original 1 to 60 many times and want new quests, zones and dungeons at Classic’s pace.
  • You main a spec Classic sidelined, or you like leveling alts (the Legacy System rewards them).
  • You can live with dungeons as the only endgame until the December 9 raids.

Stay on Classic Era or Hardcore if

  • You want patch 1.12 unchanged, from the original talents to Naxxramas and the old honor ranks.
  • You want Hardcore now. Forever’s Hardcore ruleset comes in winter, after launch.

Play retail if

  • You want Mythic+, Mythic raiding or arenas.
  • You play in short sessions and want queues, flying, housing and 13 classes.

Our pick: for anyone who enjoyed Classic, Forever is the version to start on November 4. It keeps the pace and the need for a group and adds content nobody has solved yet, on the subscription you already pay. New to WoW? Forever is the friendlier way into the old-school game; pick retail if you want to play on your own schedule. Settled on Forever? FAQ

Is WoW Forever replacing Classic?

No. Hazzikostas told Windows Central that Classic remains alongside Forever. As of October 2026, Classic Era, the Hardcore realms, the Anniversary realms (now in The Burning Crusade) and Mists of Pandaria Classic all keep running.

Can you transfer a Classic character to WoW Forever?

No transfer has been announced. Every WoW Forever character starts at level 1, and Hazzikostas described Forever as a new game where everyone starts at the beginning.

What’s the difference between WoW Forever and Turtle WoW?

Turtle WoW was a fan-run private server that added its own content to vanilla WoW. It shut down on May 15, 2026, after Blizzard won an injunction against it, as PC Gamer and Gigazine reported. WoW Forever is Blizzard’s official take on the same idea.
