The UBRS key quest gets you the Seal of Ascension, the ring that opens the door to Upper Blackrock Spire in Classic WoW. The short version: loot an Unadorned Seal of Ascension from the orcs and ogres in Lower Blackrock Spire (LBRS), show it to Vaelan near the start of LBRS, collect the Gemstones of Spirestone, Smolderthorn and Bloodaxe from Highlord Omokk, War Master Voone and Overlord Wyrmthalak, then forge the seal on the black drake Emberstrife in Dustwallow Marsh and bring it back to Vaelan.
The chain is open to both factions from level 57. The gems are the slow part: Warcraft DB’s Classic data puts their drop chances at 13% to 26%, which by our math means about 9 to 11 LBRS runs on average. Only one player in a UBRS group needs the key, so if you just want to run the instance, joining a group with a keyholder is faster.

UBRS Key Quest Chain Step by Step
The UBRS key quest chain has two quests, both called Seal of Ascension and both given by Vaelan in Lower Blackrock Spire. Here is the whole chain in order:
- Get an Unadorned Seal of Ascension. It drops from the Scarshield, Spirestone, Smolderthorn, Bloodaxe and Firebrand mobs in LBRS and from several of its bosses. Warcraft Wiki notes it can also be bought on the Auction House.
- Find Vaelan in LBRS and accept Seal of Ascension (quest level 60, requires level 57). Anyone in the group with an Unadorned Seal in their bags can take it.
- Collect the three gemstones: the Gemstone of Spirestone from Highlord Omokk, the Gemstone of Smolderthorn from War Master Voone and the Gemstone of Bloodaxe from Overlord Wyrmthalak. None of them is a guaranteed drop.
- Return to Vaelan with the three gems and the Unadorned Seal. He takes them and gives you the second Seal of Ascension quest plus Vaelan’s Gift, which holds the Unforged Seal of Ascension and the Orb of Draconic Energy.
- Travel to Emberstrife’s Den in the Wyrmbog, southern Dustwallow Marsh (56.7, 87.7), with a group.
- Fight Emberstrife down, place the Unforged Seal on the ground in front of him and stop all damage once his will starts to falter.
- Use the Orb of Draconic Energy on Emberstrife to take control of him, cast his Flames of the Black Flight on the seal and loot the Forged Seal of Ascension from it.
- Go back to Vaelan in LBRS and turn in the Forged Seal. He rewards the Seal of Ascension, the UBRS key.
Where Is Vaelan in Lower Blackrock Spire?
Vaelan is a few pulls into Lower Blackrock Spire, kneeling on a ledge in the disguise of an orc. From the instance entrance, go up the stairs and turn right, drop down and take the passage on the left toward a wooden bridge. Look up to the left: the lone kneeling figure on the ledge is Vaelan. Follow the ledge around and up the incline to reach him. When you get close he drops the disguise, and he is friendly to both factions.
The UBRS door is on the same route. Blackrock Spire’s entrance is inside Blackrock Mountain, which you enter from Searing Gorge or Burning Steppes, and Icy Veins describes the UBRS door as the first door on your left once you are inside the instance. That is where the finished key goes later.
Where the UBRS Key Gems Drop
The three UBRS key gems drop from the three generals of Lower Blackrock Spire, one gem per boss. Drop chances are from Warcraft DB’s Classic data:

Sources disagree here. Warcraft Wiki says the gems always drop, but Vaelan’s own quest text calls a gemstone on a general rare, and the database numbers and player reports on the Blizzard forums agree with the quest text. Plan for repeat runs.
Tips for the Gemstone of Spirestone, Smolderthorn and Bloodaxe Drops
- Have the quest before you kill the bosses. The gemstones are quest items, so they only drop for players who have Vaelan’s first quest. Vaelan comes before Omokk on the normal route, so pick it up on the way in.
- One gem per kill. A gem doesn’t drop for every group member. If two players in the group are on the quest, they split the drops and each needs roughly twice as many runs. Agree on who gets which gem before the first pull.
- Stay a party, not a raid. Most non-raid quests don’t progress in a raid group, so don’t convert to a raid to bring extra players.
- Omokk is the bottleneck. At 13%, the Gemstone of Spirestone takes about 8 kills on average, twice as many as Wyrmthalak’s gem.
- Horde players can double up. The Horde Onyxia attunement quest Warlord’s Command asks you to kill the same three bosses, so do both quests in the same runs.
How Many LBRS Runs Does the UBRS Key Take?
A typical UBRS key takes about 9 full LBRS runs for the gems, and about 20 runs to be 90% sure, if you are the only player in the group on the quest. This is our estimate from the Warcraft DB drop chances, assuming every run kills all three generals:

The average is 10.6 runs, pulled up by long dry streaks on Omokk. Two players sharing one group need about twice as many runs each, which is why it pays to rotate: one player finishes, the next one takes the drops.
The Unadorned Seal is usually the smaller problem. Warcraft DB lists a 5% chance for it on almost every orc and ogre in LBRS and on several bosses. If that number holds, a full clear should usually turn one up; if your luck is worse, check the Auction House.
How to Forge the Seal of Ascension at Emberstrife
You forge the Seal of Ascension by taking control of Emberstrife, a level 61 elite black drake in Emberstrife’s Den at 56.7, 87.7 in Dustwallow Marsh, and making him breathe fire on the Unforged Seal. Alliance players fly to Theramore, Horde players to Brackenwall Village, then ride to the southern edge of the Wyrmbog.
Emberstrife has about 31,400 health according to Warcraft DB and uses Cleave, Flame Breath and Frenzy, according to Warcraft Wiki. Icy Veins recommends bringing a group; we’d take a tank, a healer and two or three damage dealers. The quest owner holds both the seal and the orb. The fight goes like this:
- Tank Emberstrife facing away from the group, since Cleave and Flame Breath hit in front of him.
- Around 25% health, the quest owner places the Unforged Seal on the ground right in front of him, where the tank stands.
- When the message that Emberstrife’s will is starting to falter appears (Icy Veins puts it at 10% health), everyone stops attacking. Dismiss pets and let damage-over-time effects run out, or he may die before you can use the orb.
- The quest owner uses the Orb of Draconic Energy on Emberstrife and casts his first ability, Flames of the Black Flight, on the seal right away. The quest text warns that you only have seconds.
- Loot the Forged Seal of Ascension from the seal on the ground. Then finish him off.
On Hardcore realms, treat Emberstrife as real danger. He is a level 61 elite with Frenzy, and the riskiest moment is the end of the mind control, when he fights back again at low health against a group that has stopped attacking. Have the tank ready to pick him up the moment control breaks.
UBRS Key Level Requirements
The UBRS key quest requires level 57 to start, and both the gem bosses and Emberstrife are level 59 to 61, so most players do it at 58 to 60.

The two sources disagree on the second quest. If you are below 60 and Vaelan won’t offer the second part after you hand in the gems, the higher requirement is the likely reason.
Do You Still Need the UBRS Key in Classic?
Yes. On Classic Era and the Hardcore realms the door to Upper Blackrock Spire stays locked unless someone in the group has the Seal of Ascension. Blizzard removed the requirement only in patch 3.0.8 in January 2009, long after the vanilla patch Classic is based on. One keyholder per group is enough.
Who should get it: tanks, healers and anyone who plans to lead UBRS groups. Damage dealers can usually join a group that already has a keyholder, and on Classic Era LBRS groups are hard to find, which makes the gem runs slower than the math above. You also don’t need your own key for the attunements that run through UBRS. Both factions’ Onyxia’s Lair attunement chains end with General Drakkisath, and the Blackwing Lair attunement only asks you to touch the orb behind him, so being in the group is enough.
The key is also a ring: in Classic, the Seal of Ascension has +10 Fire, Nature and Frost Resistance. It is unique and binds when picked up.
UBRS Key in WoW Forever
Blizzard hasn’t said whether World of Warcraft: Forever, which launches on November 4, 2026, keeps the Seal of Ascension requirement. Lower and Upper Blackrock Spire are back along with every other Classic dungeon, with a recommended level of 53 in Zockify’s beta data, but the beta is capped at level 30 and ends on October 21, so nobody has tested the UBRS door yet. Can you do UBRS without a key?
Only if someone else in your group has the Seal of Ascension. One player with the key opens the door for the whole group, and nobody else needs the quest.
Where do you turn in the Seal of Ascension?
Both Seal of Ascension quests start and end with Vaelan in Lower Blackrock Spire. You hand him the three gems and the Unadorned Seal first, then the Forged Seal after the Emberstrife fight.
What is the Unadorned Seal of Ascension for?
The Unadorned Seal of Ascension starts the UBRS key quest: anyone carrying one can accept Seal of Ascension from Vaelan, and it is handed in together with the three gems. It has no other use.
Is the UBRS key quest the same for Horde and Alliance?
Yes. Vaelan is friendly to both factions, and the gems, the Emberstrife fight and the reward are identical. Only the flight path differs: Theramore for Alliance, Brackenwall Village for Horde.
