For WoW Classic thorium farming, Winterspring is the best zone overall, Un’Goro Crater is the easiest loop, and Eastern Plaguelands and Silithus pay well if you can handle elites. You need Mining 245 for Small Thorium Veins and 275 for Rich Thorium Veins, and Rich veins are the ones that also drop Arcane Crystals. An uncontested loop at level 60 on an epic mount gives roughly 80 to 130 Thorium Ore per hour by our estimate; on a busy server expect half that.
Everything here applies to Classic Era and the Hardcore realms, which still run the vanilla 1.12 game. The Anniversary realms that launched in November 2024 moved on to The Burning Crusade in early 2026 and are now on TBC Classic Anniversary Phase 3, so we point out where Thorium works differently there.

Best Zones for Thorium Farming in WoW Classic
The best zones for Thorium farming in WoW Classic are Winterspring, Un’Goro Crater, Eastern Plaguelands, Silithus and Burning Steppes. They differ in how many Rich veins they have, how dangerous the mobs are and what else you can pick up on the way.

Wowhead’s Classic database shows about 55 separate Rich Thorium Vein spawn points in Winterspring and about 75 Ooze Covered Rich Thorium spawn points in Silithus, which is why those two zones top most lists. Un’Goro Crater is the top zone for Small Thorium Veins. Mob levels are approximate zone ranges.
Winterspring
Winterspring is the best Rich Thorium zone in WoW Classic because it has more Rich Thorium Vein spawns than any other zone. The route in the map below runs up the eastern half of the zone, where most veins are, and loops down through the south. The far south has elite demons that hit hard, so skip it unless your class can handle them or sneak past.
If you also have Herbalism, Winterspring is the only zone with Icecap and also has Black Lotus spawns. The catch is competition: every miner knows this zone, so on a busy server you will find many veins already tapped.
Un’Goro Crater
Un’Goro Crater is the easiest Thorium route in WoW Classic: ride one big circle along the crater walls and mine everything you pass. It has fewer Rich veins than Winterspring and so fewer Arcane Crystals, but lots of Small Thorium, Mithril and Truesilver, and the mobs are mostly non-elite. The cave in the south and the Slithering Scar (with its Ooze Covered veins) are worth adding at 60 and skipping at lower levels.

Eastern Plaguelands
Eastern Plaguelands has a high number of Rich Thorium Veins, and fewer miners farm it than Winterspring. The problem is the elite patrols of level 57 to 58 undead in parts of the zone, which undergeared characters should skip unless they have stealth. Rich veins spawn across the zone, including the Infected Scar.
Silithus
Silithus is the best Thorium zone for rogues and druids. The Rich veins here are Ooze Covered Rich Thorium Veins inside the three silithid hives (Hive’Ashi, Hive’Zora and Hive’Regal), and on Classic Era those hives are full of elites. Each hive has three sections; clear all of them before moving to the next hive. Small veins around the edges of the zone fill the gaps.
Burning Steppes
Burning Steppes is the best Thorium zone if you run Mining and Herbalism together, because you also pick up Sungrass, Firebloom and some Dreamfoil. For pure mining it is on par with Un’Goro: mostly Small Thorium, some Rich, plus Mithril and Iron. The two caves along the route have level 50 mobs.
Azshara, Western Plaguelands and Dire Maul
Azshara, Western Plaguelands and Dire Maul are the backup options when the main zones are crowded. Azshara has few Rich veins, but a good share of them spawn on the small islands and in the water of the Bay of Storms, where few miners bother to swim. Western Plaguelands has Rich veins only around Hearthglen and in one cave on the east side of the river.
Dire Maul East is the classic instance farm. Player guides report 2 to 4 Rich Thorium Veins in the tunnel near the last boss, and resetting the instance brings them back. Classic limits you to 5 instance entries per hour, so this works best as an add-on to runs you do anyway, or as the fastest way to push Mining from 275 to 300.
Small vs Rich Thorium Veins
Rich Thorium Veins need Mining 275 and give more ore per node than Small Thorium Veins, which need Mining 245. On Classic Era the bigger difference is Arcane Crystals: only Rich veins (including Ooze Covered ones) can drop them. Small veins started dropping Arcane Crystals in patch 2.0.1, so on TBC Anniversary realms both types can.

The ore numbers per node are the weakest data in this guide. Blizzard doesn’t publish them, Warcraft Wiki lists 1 to 3 for Small and 3 to 5 for Rich veins after a March 2007 yield increase, and Classic Era players on the official forums mostly report 2 to 3 ore from Rich veins. Both types also drop Dense Stone and a chance at gems like Star Ruby, Huge Emerald and Azerothian Diamond.

What Mining Level You Need for Thorium
You can mine Small Thorium Veins at Mining 245 and Rich Thorium Veins at Mining 275 in WoW Classic. Smelting Thorium Ore into Thorium Bars needs Mining 250 and the Smelt Thorium skill from any Mining trainer, plus a forge.
- 225: learn Artisan Mining from a trainer (character level 35 needed).
- 230 to 245: keep mining Mithril and Truesilver until Small Thorium turns available.
- 245 to 275: mine Small Thorium in Un’Goro or Burning Steppes. Train Smelt Thorium at 250; smelting also gives skill points.
- 275 to 300: mine Rich veins in Winterspring or Eastern Plaguelands, or do Dire Maul East resets.
How Much Thorium Per Hour Can You Farm?
A level 60 miner on an epic mount farms roughly 80 to 130 Thorium Ore per hour on an uncontested Winterspring or Eastern Plaguelands loop, by our estimate. That number drops fast with competition, and nobody publishes reliable measurements, so treat the table as a starting point and time your own loop.

How we got there: an epic mount covers a Winterspring loop in 15 to 20 minutes, a quiet loop turns up 10 to 15 nodes, and Rich and Small veins average 2 to 3 ore. Nodes don’t respawn on a fixed spot. Blizzard has never published the timer; players on the official forums report about 15 minutes, with the new vein appearing at any of several spawn points in the area. That is why a long loop beats camping one spot.
What Thorium Is Used For
Thorium Bars are the main metal of level 60 crafting in WoW Classic. The biggest single use is Arcanite: alchemists transmute one Thorium Bar and one Arcane Crystal into an Arcanite Bar, which goes into weapons like Arcanite Reaper and many endgame crafts.
- Blacksmithing: Thorium and Imperial Plate sets, Enchanted Thorium Bars, and most endgame patterns from Radiant to Icebane.
- Engineering: Thorium Widgets, Thorium Tubes, Thorium Grenades, Field Repair Bot 74A and Arcane Bombs.
- Alchemy: Greater Stoneshield Potions use the ore directly.
- Dense Stone from the veins: Dense Sharpening Stones, Dense Weightstones and Dense Blasting Powder.
- Jewelcrafting (TBC Anniversary): prospecting 5 Thorium Ore gives vanilla gems for leveling.
Prices depend entirely on your server. On Classic Era, demand comes mostly from people leveling Blacksmithing and Engineering and from Arcanite, and ore often sells for less than the bars. On TBC Anniversary, Outland ores are worth far more, so Thorium is mainly leveling material. Check your auction house before a farming session, and compare bar and ore prices before you smelt.
Hardcore and TBC Anniversary Notes
On Hardcore realms, Un’Goro Crater is the safest Thorium zone, and Winterspring’s southern gorge, the Eastern Plaguelands elite patrols and the Silithus hives are where miners die. Nodes next to elites are never worth a character. Dire Maul East resets carry the usual dungeon risk on top.
On TBC Classic Anniversary realms, a level 70 miner can farm every Thorium zone without trouble. Some mobs along these routes lost their elite status in The Burning Crusade, and Small veins drop Arcane Crystals too. Flying mounts don’t work in the old world, so routes are the same ground loops as on Classic Era.
Thorium in WoW: Forever
World of Warcraft: Forever launches on November 4, 2026 on the vanilla world, but the beta is capped at level 20 to 30, so nobody has seen the Thorium zones yet. Blizzard hasn’t announced changes to Thorium or node locations, and Forever reworks some zones, so we can’t confirm that these routes carry over. We will update this guide once the level 50 to 60 zones are tested.

TBH I have much better luck in EPL (Eastern Plaguelands)… you will come across more rich thorium veins here compared to
EPL – recommended to be high lvl 50’s – 60 before attempting to ride the edges of the zone..
Best results for rich veins will be found up the paths to where the abominations, crypt spiders, skull gaurdians are located (lvl 58-60’s). Rich Thorium veins have a higher yield of thorium, dense stones, and higher drop rate of valuable gems such as arcane crystals that are needed for epic crafting.
Possible plus side is that if you have completed the intro quest to acquire the AD rep trinket.. you can also farm the lvl 57+ mobs to gain invader scourge stones to go towards your Argent dawn rep.. basically a 2 for 1 win.. This is my goto zone for thorium.
Ungoro.. Recommended lvl 52+
Ungoro does have thorium veins, but generally the small ones or possibly 1 or 2 ooze covered ones found in the hive Located in the south.. these general only yield 1 – 2 hits then are gone.. most of the time only 1 hitters.. Which means less chance of gems to drop with each loot.. most of which can be found going up to paths along the mtn edges..
On the plus side is you are able to farm these much easier in the low – mid lvl 50’s range as long as you are aware of your surroundings..
