Blizzard announced Diablo V at the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony on September 12, and the Diablo 5 release date is set for Spring 2029. There is no exact day, no platform list, and the teaser trailer contained no gameplay. What Blizzard did show, in a developer panel later that day, is a sequel that starts where every other Diablo game ends: Diablo has already won.
For Diablo 4 players, the bigger news came from interviews after the show: no more Diablo 4 expansions are planned. Lord of Hatred was the last one. Here is everything Blizzard has confirmed about Diablo V, what it means for Diablo 4 until 2029, and what is still unknown.

Story: Sanctuary Has Fallen and Diablo Won
Diablo has conquered Sanctuary as a stepping stone toward invading the Heavens and rules from the throne of Westmarch. Narrative director Jennifer Hepler said at the panel that the game opens seven years after that conquest, after other heroes tried to stop him and failed. The few humans who haven’t bowed or joined his cults are on the run, and some powerful ones have been corrupted into Dread Commanders who rival Hell’s own lords.
You play the Heir to Westmarch, who can enter Diablo’s personal corner of Hell, the Terror Realm, and survive. Like the Wanderer with Lilith, your character has a mysterious connection to Diablo that makes them both a threat to him and vulnerable to his influence.
Classes: Demon Hunter, Monk and the New Plague Knight
Three classes were revealed: the Demon Hunter with twin crossbows, the Monk with fists and holy power, and the new Plague Knight, a heavily armored class that spreads disease and then consumes it for power.
The more interesting claim came from senior game director Joe Shely: Diablo V will launch with more total classes than any previous Diablo game. Diablo III ended with seven. Diablo 4 has eight today (five launch classes, Spiritborn, Paladin and Warlock), and the Amazon makes nine in 2027. Taken literally, that means at least ten classes on day one, so seven or more are still unrevealed.
Gameplay: Procedural World, No Towns, Diablo II-Style Items
No gameplay footage has been shown yet. What the panel described breaks with Diablo 4’s handcrafted open world:
- Procedural generation is back for the overworld and dungeons. Dread Commanders keep reshaping the land (“Terror Forming”), so terrain, points of interest, monsters and rewards can change when you return.
- No towns. A caravan of survivors travels with you as vendors, crafters and companions, and all side quests come from its members. Two were teased: a former Sister of the Sightless Eye and a treasure goblin named Zarg.
- Diablo II-style items. Large items take several inventory slots again, gear sets return, crafting includes Runes and Runewords, and Blizzard is experimenting with stat requirements.
- Less level scaling. Shely told PC Gamer that automatic monster scaling can undercut the feeling of getting stronger, and Diablo V will take “a somewhat different approach.” Details aren’t settled.
- Multiplayer stays. All content is playable solo or with friends. Whether you’ll meet other players in the open world hasn’t been answered.

What Diablo 5 Means for Diablo 4 Until 2029
Diablo game director Brent Gibson told PC Gamer that the team is “all focused on [Diablo 4] seasons and getting to Diablo 5” and that no further Diablo 4 expansions are planned. His reasoning: Lord of Hatred finished the Story of Hatred with Mephisto, and the next arc is the Story of Terror. Here is what is confirmed for Diablo 4:
- Season of Hell’s Legacy, the 30th anniversary season, started on September 15, with Deckard Cain and fights against Baal, Mephisto and Diablo.
- The Amazon class pack arrives in the first half of 2027, with bows and javelins (a new weapon type) across four archetypes: Champion, Skirmisher, Ranger and Commander. Price and date aren’t announced.
- Nintendo Switch 2: the Age of Hatred Collection (base game, Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred) launched on September 15.
- Seasons carry the story. Diablo V is set about 100 years after Diablo 4, and Gibson said the team wants to see how players react season to season before deciding exactly how Sanctuary falls.
Seasons are now Diablo 4’s entire content pipeline for two and a half years. Diablo 4 has run on a roughly three-month season rhythm since launch. If that holds, expect about ten more seasons before Spring 2029, and their storylines are the canon lead-in to Diablo V. If you skipped an expansion, Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred are now the complete Diablo 4 story, with no third chapter coming.
Diablo 4 isn’t being shut down when the sequel arrives. Gibson pointed to Diablo II: Resurrected, which got a new class in 2026, and said Blizzard will support Diablo 4 “for a very long time.” Nothing has been said about carrying characters, cosmetics or purchases over to Diablo V.
Platforms: PC in Practice, Consoles Unannounced
Blizzard’s official line is that platforms will be announced later. Kotaku reports that at a BlizzCon press conference, Diablo’s PR director answered a platform question with a stage whisper of “PC version”. Blizzard later clarified that this acknowledged PC and Battle.net as foundational, not a full platform announcement. Diablo 4 and both expansions shipped on PlayStation and Xbox too, so consoles are likely, but none is confirmed.
Still Unknown
- The exact release date, price and editions
- The rest of the class roster (seven or more, if Shely’s claim holds)
- How level scaling and the shared open world will work
- Whether there will be a beta, and when
The next real information should come from the regular development updates Blizzard plans to start in 2027. Until then, the Diablo 4 seasons are the closest look you’ll get at how Sanctuary falls.
