Diablo 4 Season 15, the Season of Hell’s Legacy, went live on September 15, 2026 as the centerpiece of Diablo’s 30th anniversary. This Diablo 4 Season 15 guide covers the one choice that shapes your whole season: which Prime Evil’s Splinter of Evil you carry. Diablo, Baal and Mephisto each change a different set of endgame activities, so the right pick depends on what you actually farm, not on damage.
Below you’ll find a decision table for the three Splinters, how Soul Splinters and Waking Nightmares work, the crafting changes worth knowing, and what the 3.2.1 hotfixes and patch 3.2.2 (dated September 29 in Blizzard’s notes) fixed. Everything is based on Blizzard’s official season overview, the official patch notes and hotfix posts, and data from Maxroll and Game8.

Which Splinter of Evil Should You Pick?
Pick the Splinter of Evil that matches your main farming activity. The seasonal questline gives you all three Splinters (Diablo beneath Tristram Cathedral, Baal at Arreat Summit, Mephisto in the Durance of Hate), but you can only bear one at a time. Each one fires an Iconic Power in combat and levels its own reputation track with eight War Plans modifiers for its activities. All three also modify the Tree of Whispers.
The combat side is close to identical across the three. Per Maxroll’s breakdown, each Iconic Power gets a node that generates 50 Primary Resource, one that makes enemies Vulnerable, one that deals 20% of an enemy’s Maximum Life over 4 seconds, and a kill-streak mode. Maxroll’s own verdict is that the choice isn’t about output. It changes where your rewards come from.
| Splinter | Damage | Activities it modifies | Best late upgrades (rank) | Pick it if you |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diablo’s Splinter of Terror | Fire | Helltide, Infernal Hordes | Council Coffers: Chest of Talismans costs 1 Aether (20). Roots of Power: +1 Monster Power and lots of Aberrant Cinders (22) | Farm Helltides and Infernal Hordes for Talismans and Cinders |
| Baal’s Splinter of Destruction | Cold | Kurast Undercity, Lair Bosses | Lair of Runes: extra Runes from Lair Bosses (14). Exotic Armory: Hoard Chests drop 3 extra Uniques (20). Colossal Foe: Superior Lair Keys (22) | Farm bosses for Uniques, Runes and Mythic chances |
| Mephisto’s Splinter of Hatred | Physical | The Pit, Nightmare Dungeons | Choron’s Blessing: glyph success as if 10 tiers higher (20). Resplendent Favor: doubles Resplendent Sparks from that source (22) | Push the Pit, level glyphs and chase Resplendent Sparks |
Our pick for most players: Baal. Boss farming is where Diablo 4’s best loot comes from, and three extra Uniques per Hoard Chest plus extra Runes and better Lair Keys stack directly on top of what you already do. Mephisto is the better choice once your gear is mostly done and you are pushing Pit tiers and glyph levels, because Choron’s Blessing and doubled Resplendent Sparks speed up exactly the slowest part of endgame progression. Diablo is the niche pick for Helltide and Infernal Horde players who want Talisman sets.
There’s one catch: each Splinter also makes you more vulnerable to its own Prime Evil. Blizzard hasn’t published how large that penalty is. If you change your mind, you can pick up a different Splinter from the largest Waking Nightmares, so the choice isn’t permanent. The rank numbers above come from Maxroll’s list and may shift with hotfixes.
Waking Nightmares Explained
Waking Nightmares are Season 15’s new encounters, rebuilt versions of iconic moments from Diablo I, II and III. According to Blizzard, they come in three sizes:
- Large Waking Nightmares: multi-level Capstone dungeons that recreate the showdowns with the Prime Evils. You play them first in the questline, can replay them on Torment difficulties for rewards, and they return as pinnacle Capstones at Torment 10 and above. This is also where you swap your Splinter of Evil.
- Dungeon Waking Nightmares: normal-length dungeons at fixed spots on the map, such as the Den of Evil from Diablo II.
- Open-world Waking Nightmares: one-room encounters that spawn suddenly, with a past boss like Queen Araneae or waves of classic monsters like Flayers.
Game8 reports that Waking Nightmares also drop the season’s new Unique Runes, which feed hidden Runeword recipes in the Horadric Cube, much like Diablo II’s undocumented Runewords.
Soul Splinters: What They Do and Which Are Worth It
Soul Splinters are Season 15’s gems for jewelry sockets. Each one gives a strong bonus paired with a real drawback, and you can equip up to three across your amulet and rings. They drop as Magic, Rare, Legendary or Unique, and the Horadric Cube’s Amalgamation recipe combines Splinters of the same type and rarity into the next rarity up.

| Soul Splinter | Boon | Drawback | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Splinter of Lies (Belial) | More gold, crafting materials and experience | Always Weakened and Vulnerable | Leveling and farming content you overpower |
| Splinter of Damnation (Skarn) | Elite kills raise Monster Power (and XP on some versions) | Harder monsters | Farming, if your build has room |
| Splinter of Hellfire (Na-Krul) | Big increased damage bonus | No Critical Strike Chance | Builds that don’t scale on crits |
| Splinter of Anguish (Andariel) | Attack Speed and Critical Strike Chance | Higher Primary Resource costs | Builds with spare resource |
| Splinter of Sin (Azmodan) | Much more Maximum Life | Lower Maximum Primary Resource | Hardcore, cooldown builds |
| Splinter of Pain (Duriel) | Large Damage Reduction | Slower movement | Hardcore and boss fights |
| Splinter of the Mother (Lilith) | Unhindered, touching enemies makes them Vulnerable | Stunned after touching a set number of enemies | Melee builds that can live with the stun |
| Splinter of the Black Soulstone | Stacking damage per kill | Stacking damage taken per kill | Fast-clearing builds |
We left exact numbers out of this table on purpose. Values change with rarity, and the published figures don’t agree: Blizzard’s own preview shows the Unique Splinter of Hellfire at 50% increased damage, while Game8 lists it at x100%. Check the tooltip in your game before you commit a socket.
Our take: Splinter of Lies is the easy early pick, since the extra gold, materials and experience pay off while nothing can threaten you. Swap it out as soon as you push content that hits back, because being permanently Weakened and Vulnerable is a heavy price at your limit. For pushing, Hellfire is the most interesting one for non-crit builds and useless for crit builds.
Legacy Uniques and Crafting Changes in Season 15
Season 15 adds nine legacy Uniques based on relics from earlier Diablo games, and they stay in the game on both Seasonal and Eternal realms after the season ends. The headliners are the Stone of Jordan ring, Leoric’s Crown, the Nemesis Bracers, Henri’s Perquisition (Sorcerer, Necromancer and Warlock focus) and Messerschmidt’s Reaver. Several of them also exist as Unique Charms.
The crafting changes matter more than the new items for most players:
- Upgrade Direct Item to Mythic (Horadric Cube) turns a Unique into its Mythic version 1:1, keeping affixes, Tempers and Masterworking. It costs more than the Jeweler and Blacksmith recipes, and you can equip only one item with its Crafted tag. It doesn’t work on Unmodifiable items, so don’t Transfigure a Unique you plan to upgrade.
- A second Blacksmith cache rolls only Iconic Mythics, at the same cost as the regular Mythic Unique cache.
- Affix Value Reroll rerolls base affixes on gear and Talismans while protecting Greater Affixes, Enchantments, Tempers and Transfigurations.
- Horadric Reroll fully randomizes the base affixes on Legendary or better Charms and Seals without touching set bonuses or unique powers.
Shared War Plans, Rebirth and Season Ranks
War Plans reputation is now shared across all characters on your account in the same partition (Seasonal or Eternal, Hardcore or not, Solo Self-Found or not). Each character keeps its own planner, so an alt can spend the same points on different nodes. That makes a second seasonal character far cheaper to gear than in earlier seasons.
Hardcore tip: at the end of Season 15, War Plans progress moves to Eternal only through a living Hardcore character in the same partition. Blizzard’s advice is to keep a level 1 “storage” Hardcore character alive, so your points survive even if your main dies before the season ends.
Rebirth is the other new system: you can move an Eternal character into the Seasonal realm at level 1 and keep its class, name, appearance and saved cosmetics. Empty its inventory and gear into your Eternal stash first, because items still on the character are lost.
Season Ranks have 9 ranks and 125 objectives this time, worth up to 14 Skill Points, 42 Paragon points, 10 Resplendent Sparks and 5 Mythic Unique Caches. About 15% of objectives require the Lord of Hatred expansion, including the ones needed to finish Rank VIII. Game8 also reports that passing Season Rank 5 gets you a Liquid Rainbow, which opens a portal to Whimsyshire.
Patch 3.2.2 and Hotfixes: What Changed Since Launch
Blizzard has fixed several Season 15 progression blockers since launch, but hasn’t made any big balance changes. The biggest items:
- Hotfix 4 (September 22): the Prime Evil Council fight had been abused for excessive experience and loot, so its loot cooldown was increased. The Warlock’s Fiend of Abaddon Lesser Demon Bonus upgrade was fixed and re-enabled, and an unintended damage interaction between the Old Mountain Talisman 5-set bonus and Grief was fixed. The Butcher can no longer be spawned infinitely.
- Patch 3.2.2 (September 29): fixes the seasonal questline breaking if you entered the Worldstone Chamber portal too quickly, the Lester’s Farm hive blocking dungeon progress, and missing rewards from the Chamber of Bone. The Edge Runeword no longer gives two items per Purveyor of Curiosities purchase, Druid Pulverize can no longer lock a Staggered boss forever, and Henri’s Perquisition’s Unique Charm is now craftable in the Cube.
If your seasonal questline got stuck in the first two weeks, try it again after 3.2.2. Most of the known blockers are fixed in that build.
When Does Diablo 4 Season 15 End?
Blizzard hasn’t announced an end date for Diablo 4 Season 15 as of October 2. Season 14 ran from June 30 to September 15, which is 77 days. If Season of Hell’s Legacy runs as long, it ends around December 1, 2026. Treat that as an estimate until Blizzard confirms it.
After that, expect more of the same rhythm. Blizzard has said no more Diablo 4 expansions are planned before Diablo 5 in Spring 2029, so seasons like this one carry Diablo 4 from here on, with the Amazon class pack due in the first half of 2027.
Diablo 4 Season 15 FAQ
Do I need Lord of Hatred to play Season 15?
No, but you need it to finish everything. About 15% of Season 15 objectives require Lord of Hatred, including those needed to complete Season Rank VIII.
Can you change your Splinter of Evil in Diablo 4?
Yes. You can bear only one Splinter of Evil at a time, but you can collect a different one from the largest Waking Nightmares and switch to that Prime Evil’s reputation track.
Are the Season 15 legacy Uniques seasonal only?
No. Blizzard says the nine legacy Uniques are permanent and drop on both Seasonal and Eternal realms. Soul Splinters, in contrast, are seasonal items.
