Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday, October 23, and the Modern Warfare 4 Vault Edition costs $99.99 against $69.99 for the Standard Edition on Steam’s US store. Our short answer: buy the digital Standard Edition if you mainly want the campaign and some multiplayer, and buy the Vault Edition only if you would pay for the Season 1 BlackCell pass anyway. In that case the Vault Edition is the cheaper way to get it, especially with the 10% loyalty discount.

Most edition guides were written in May and still sell the pre-order on open beta early access. That beta ran in August, so that perk is gone. What’s left is a week of Campaign Early Access from October 16, a few cosmetics, and the Vault content. Everything below is based on Activision’s official editions and pre-order post (last updated July 23), its later blog posts, and the Steam store page as of early October.

Modern Warfare 4 Editions Compared

Modern Warfare 4 comes in three versions: Digital Standard, Digital Vault and Physical Standard. Only the digital versions get the pre-order bonuses that still matter in October, and the Vault Edition is digital only.

The Gilded Pearl camo pack from the summer pre-order challenge is also listed on Steam’s pre-purchase page, but its serialized camo was a race in Black Ops 7 that started on July 23, so late buyers should not count on the numbered version.

What the Vault Edition Adds

The Modern Warfare 4 Vault Edition adds eight Operators, five weapon Blueprints, one season of BlackCell and a DMZ bonus on top of the full game. None of it is a game mode: campaign, multiplayer and DMZ are identical in both editions.

  • Hostile Alliance Operator Pack: Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix at launch. Price and Valeria come with masked and unmasked skins.
  • Special Forces Operator Pack: COM SFT (France), KSK Amphibious (Germany), South Korean Special Forces and SAS (United Kingdom), each with a voice pack in its own language.
  • Signature Weapon Collection: Kastov 762, ISO Nightshade, Rezi 12, Oris 8.6 and a Combat Knife, each with a Blueprint. The four guns come with an Apex Attachment unlocked at launch.
  • BlackCell (one season): the full Battle Pass, 20 tier skips, 1,100 COD Points, an exclusive Operator and Blueprint, and BlackCell versions of Battle Pass items. It unlocks when Season 1 starts, and Activision hasn’t announced that date.
  • DMZ Deployment Bonus: extra DMZ content at launch. Activision has not said what it contains.

The Apex Attachments are the only item with a gameplay side. The Kastov Arc barrel, for example, fires an RF pulse that disables electronics and vehicles. Activision hasn’t said whether the Apex Attachments can be unlocked through normal progression, so it’s unclear how big an early head start the Vault Edition gives.

Is the Modern Warfare 4 Vault Edition Worth It?

The Modern Warfare 4 Vault Edition is worth it if you would buy BlackCell for Season 1 anyway, and not worth it if you wouldn’t. The math comes down to one number: in Black Ops 7, BlackCell sold separately for $29.99 per season, according to Dot Esports’ breakdown of the Season 1 pass.

The Vault Edition costs $30 more than the Standard Edition. If Activision prices BlackCell the same way in Modern Warfare 4 (it hasn’t announced a price yet), the Vault Edition is the Standard Edition plus a pass you’d pay $29.99 for, and the eight Operators, five Blueprints and DMZ bonus cost you one cent. With the loyalty discount the gap shrinks to $20, which makes the Vault Edition about $10 cheaper than buying the Standard Edition and BlackCell separately.

If you don’t buy Battle Passes, the picture flips. Then you’re paying $30 (or $20) for skins and five Blueprints, which is a lot for cosmetics. One point in the Vault’s favor even then: the 1,100 COD Points inside BlackCell are store currency, so part of the extra price comes back in a form you can spend on whatever you do want.

Loyalty Discount: How to Get the Vault Edition for $89.99

The Modern Warfare 4 loyalty discount takes 10% off the Vault Edition, which is $89.99 instead of $99.99 in the US. Activision attaches four conditions to it:

  1. You own and have played a qualifying game: Modern Warfare (2019), Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, Modern Warfare II (2022), Modern Warfare III, Black Ops 6 or Black Ops 7. Any edition counts. Playing one through an active Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or PC subscription counts, and so does claiming one through PlayStation Plus Monthly Games.
  2. You pre-order on the same platform and the same account you played that game on.
  3. You buy the Vault Edition directly. The discount does not apply to the $30 Vault upgrade.
  4. You buy before October 23. The offer is for pre-orders only.

Point three is the trap. If you pre-order the Standard Edition now and upgrade later, you pay the full $99.99 in total. If there’s a real chance you’ll want the Vault Edition, decide before October 23 and buy it in one go.

Physical vs Digital: Why the Disc Is the Weakest Buy

A physical copy of Modern Warfare 4 misses every pre-order bonus that is still running. Activision’s June 12 post limits Campaign Early Access to digital pre-orders of the Standard or Vault Edition, the Hunter Killer skin is for the two digital editions only, and the Inner Circuit M4 Blueprint goes to “any digital edition”. The disc pre-order’s only extra was a beta code, and the beta ended in August.

The physical edition also can’t be upgraded to the Vault Edition, and there is no PC disc. The reasons to buy one anyway: you want to resell it, lend it out, or a retailer has it on sale below $69.99. Those are real reasons, but know that you’re giving up a week of campaign access for them.

Is Modern Warfare 4 on Game Pass?

Modern Warfare 4 is not on Game Pass at launch, Activision’s editions post says. That breaks the pattern of the last two years, when Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 both launched day one on Game Pass (we covered the Black Ops 6 Game Pass launch in 2024). Game Pass subscribers have to buy the game like everyone else.

Two things soften that. A Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or PC member who played a qualifying Call of Duty through the subscription gets the loyalty discount on the Vault Edition. And Xbox purchases are Xbox Play Anywhere, so one purchase covers both Xbox Series X|S and the Xbox PC app. When or whether Modern Warfare 4 joins Game Pass later is unknown; reports guessing at a year or more are speculation, not an announcement.

Modern Warfare 4 Preload and Early Access Dates

Modern Warfare 4 Campaign Early Access starts on Friday, October 16, one week before the full launch on October 23. These are the dates Activision has confirmed so far:

DateWhat happensWho

The PC preload at 9:00 AM Pacific on October 15 is 12:00 PM Eastern, 5:00 PM in the UK, 6:00 PM in Central Europe, and 1:00 AM on October 16 in Japan. Plan for 115 GB: that’s the SSD space Activision lists for every PC spec tier. PC players also need TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot switched on, so check that before launch week.

Three timing details are still open. Activision hasn’t given a console preload date or a start time for Campaign Early Access in the posts we checked. And while Activision’s September 29 PC post says the game unlocks “at midnight local time” on October 23, Steam lists the release as October 22. That usually points to a global unlock that lands on the evening of October 22 in the Americas, but treat it as unconfirmed until Activision posts launch times.

Which Modern Warfare 4 Edition Should You Buy?

  • Campaign first, some multiplayer: Digital Standard, pre-ordered before October 16 so you get the full early access week. $69.99.
  • You buy the Battle Pass every season: Vault Edition, bought directly with the loyalty discount. $89.99, and you’re ahead of buying BlackCell on its own.
  • Game Pass subscriber: same choice as above, but check that your Game Pass account shows the loyalty discount before you pay.
  • Switch 2 owner: digital through the eShop if you want early access; the physical copy only makes sense if you plan to resell it.
  • Not sure you’ll play past the campaign: wait for reviews. You lose the early access week and some skins, but a Vault Edition bought after launch still gets the BlackCell season that’s live when you buy it.
